For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Peepul is an education-focused non-profit. We dream and work towards creating an education system in India that enables ‘every child to realize his/her potential.’ We work closely with governments at the national, state and corporation levels to transform government schools and government systems. We partner with government school systems in India so that the poorest of the poor in India have the opportunity to become strong leaders and successful citizens. Peepul works intensively across the Indian states of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.India has a large education system with over 250 million children, of whom nearly two-thirds go to the 1.5 million government-run schools. The poorest of the poor in India depend on the public education system to realize their dreams of a better future. This system being free of cost is a lifeline for them, and the government expends immense resources towards enabling learning for these children. However, The 2022 ASER survey indicates that only 21% of the students in Grade 3 had basic reading ability while only 26% had basic arithmetic ability. For Grade 5, the number stood at 43% and 26%, respectively. If left unaddressed, this crisis in education will leave a large section of the future generation without essential life skills, critical thinking abilities, and core human values.Peepul, together with teachers, principals and government officials, works on government school system transformation in India so that the system can begin to shift from a focus on school administration to a focus on classroom learning. Peepul closely partners with national, state and local governments to creating meaningful engagement between students and teachers to improve learning outcomes, and create exemplar education ecosystems that help every child achieve their potential. Peepul’s approach to creating exemplar education ecosystem has four critical pillars.(1) creating model demonstration schools to build belief that high-quality education is possible in public schools(2) teacher skilling to build cadres of high-quality teachers(3) strengthening mentoring and coaching of teachers, by school principals, block and cluster-level academic officials, to ensure a supportive ecosystem that sustains and(4) constructive monitoring and administration to ensure data-based support and enablement that builds accountability within the systemAt a programmatic level, we run systemic education programmes that, together, ensure that we adopt a holistic view towards improving state education systems:<ol><li>Exemplar Schools, Delhi – we run three Exemplar schools in New Delhi, catering to 1000+ students, under a public-private-partnership model with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, deploying a whole-school-transformation approach that caters to students from the poorest of the poor backgrounds. These schools are ‘bright-spots’ in the system and act as lighthouses for the possibilities within it, setting a benchmark for what great looks like in the system. The schools' exhibit exemplar results – 85%+ of our children meet or exceed grade-level expectations while showing ~ 2-3x better performance in foundational literacy and numeracy compared to other government schools in the same municipality. </li><li>Teacher Development programme, Delhi - We run capacity-building workshops for government school teachers in New Delhi to build the capacity of the system to deliver high-quality education. We use a three-pronged strategy of – (1) bite-sized modular training sessions, (2) professional learning communities, and (3) in-classroom observations and support to build the capacity of teachers. As a result, 95% of trained teachers have implemented classroom management techniques from the workshops while 77% of were able to fulfil their intended lesson objectives. This program will train 2,500 teachers and 48 Master Trainers over the coming three years. </li><li>MCD School Education Transformation Programme, Delhi - Peepul is driving a 3-year holistic system strengthening programme, towards improving learning outcomes across government schools under Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD). This project reaches out to 8,00,000+ students and 17,000+ teachers across 1500+ MCD schools. The programme design has two primary objectives: (a) Improve the learning outcomes of students in the state school system, (b) At a system level, develop the capacity of the state to support and further improve its education system after the conclusion of the programme. ​</li><li>Chief Minister’s CM Rise programme, Madhya Pradesh - CM Rise is a flagship program of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for which Peepul is the chief implementation partner. The program aims to build the resilience of the government education system to nurture a holistic student learning ecosystem. The program currently has 275 CM RISE schools and aims to build a total of 9200+ schools in the state that will offer high quality education to children from economically and socially weaker sections of the society.</li><li>CM RISE Teacher Professional Development, Madhya Pradesh - We have partnered with the Government of Madhya Pradesh on the CM Rise Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme— a state-wide effort to support 300,000 government school teachers in improving their pedagogical and academic interventions. We took on the challenge of training all teachers in Madhya Pradesh by building upon existing digital public infrastructure— the DIKSHA Platform. We made national assets by rolling out digital bite-sized modules across the state and monitored teacher's participation. In addition to digital training, we diversified our interventions to include in-person training and supporting mentor teachers in conducting classroom observations.</li><li>Digital Literacy, Delhi - The Digital Literacy Programme was introduced to provide 21st-century skills to children from underprivileged communities. Peepul and Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) have collaborated with a mission to set up digital labs and incorporate a computer science-based curriculum to impart coding and computational skills. The Digital Literacy Programme in Delhi aims to bring a systemic change by creating space for a computer science curriculum in MCD schools for grades 3, 4 and 5. The programme aims to provide early access to digital learning and develop 21st-century skills through block-based programming. Peepul has scaled the digital literacy programme to 47 MCD schools and 9400 students by providing in-person training to teachers who can provide a minimum of 1 hour of digital access per week to students. </li><li>Digital Literacy, Madhya Pradesh - The Digital Literacy programme in Madhya Pradesh aims to equip teachers and master trainers to build computational skills among their peers and students. We are supporting the School Education Department to pilot a curriculum in 80 schools to teach computers in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. As per the curriculum, 42 periods (40 minutes each) have been assigned to teach computers comprising topics like Fundamentals of Computers, Block-based coding (Scratch Jr.), and Digital Citizenship in one academic year.</li><li>LIFT-Ed: Assessment Reforms, Delhi - LIFT-Ed is a programme funded by the FLN-focused Development Impact Bond (DIB). This multi-year project focuses on “Assessment-informed Instruction” to drive improvement in student learning outcomes in MCD. This outcome-focused programme aims to lay a strong FLN foundation among the primary students of government schools. In LIFT-Ed, our theory of change is that embedded government partnerships and capacity-building of stakeholders will lead to the strengthening of systems at all levels and data-driven shifts in classroom practices, thereby improving SLOs in the long term. As part of the programme, we are building the capacity of: (a) teachers to conduct formative assessments and improvise instructional practices, (b) school heads (HoS) to provide mentorship to teachers and make data-based decisions, and (c) officials to drive systemic data-based decision-making.</li></ol>

We have already procured the material and are having them delivered to the schools where we work. The ration is being provided to the families of our exemplar school students. The families will come to school in batches and collect their ration supply. Our community officers will be present to ensure a smooth and safe process. We are currently providing 2 weeks supply in the first round of provisions. It's been a tough time for our communities and thanks to each and every donation we received we have been able to start with the ration distribution.
