“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Even those who suffered the greatest hardship can enjoy peace eventuallyAnushka and Avi (names changed) were turned out of the life they knew when they were diagnosed with Hansen's disease. With nowhere else to go, they came to Raphael for support and have never looked back since. Alas, their woes were not over. Unfortunately, Avi passed away from TB just a few years after they arrived. But even this tragedy could not stifle Anushka's strong spirit. She worked hard as a cleaner in Raphael's shelter home for many years and brought up her children as best she could. Her hard work paid off. Both her children now have respectable jobs and live independently. Anushka continues to thrive in Raphael's shelter home, which recently underwent renovations that were funded by our generous supporters. Her new accommodation is bright, clean, and has enough space for her grandson to play as he pleases. Anushka is not alone. Countless individuals suffer from the stigma associated with leprosy. Our beneficiaries need your help to save their homes! Although well-built, years of wear and tear have slowly torn down Raphael's shelter facility, leaving our residents without a comfortable place to call home. We've done our best to resolve the problem but need your financial support to do more. With the help of our selfless donors, we've fixed issues such as leaky roofs and cracks in the building foundation, optimized the drainage system, improved access to water, and renovated the rooms of our beneficiaries. But we have more work to do so that these former lepers cast out from society can enjoy the life of dignity and comfort they deserve. Please help us take care of these innocent souls. Having their lives upturned by being fired from their jobs, tossed out of their homes, and abandoned by their families, the residents of Shiv Sadan (run by Raphael) are desperate for help to save their home from crumbling. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, and we're thrilled to share some heartwarming insights from the visit. 🙌😊 Field Visit Date: 18/08/2023Field Visit by: Nehal Negi, Sr. Associate, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Summary:We visited Shiv Sadan, run by Raphael in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, providing a home for 24 leprosy-affected residents and their families. Some residents work at Raphael and their children receive educational support. Shelter, food, healthcare, security, employment opportunities, and support for their children are all provided at Raphael. Most residents were abandoned by families due to their medical conditions. The quarters are in bad shape with the ceilings on the verge of collapse, old pathways, and an inadequate drainage system, especially challenging during monsoons. The renovation work of the quarters is in progress, aiming to be completed by year-end. The rooms and kitchen were once interconnected without privacy. But now a door has been constructed for privacy and additional security. The medical room is well-equipped, recently renovated with contributions from this campaign, as the roof and ceiling were crumbling. The objective of the SE Programme is to generate awareness, through advocacy, about Persons with Disability (PwD); identify and assess children ( to include young adults) with intellectual &amp; other developmental disabilities (such as, but not limited to Autism, Cerebral Palsy &amp; Down Syndrome); educate &amp; train children with disabilities (CwD) to realise their potential; and facilitate their rehabilitation in the family and community. 
 On campus facilities and services include:·         Assisted independent living in a simulated ‘home’ environment for young adults – separately for 4 girls &amp; 4 boys.·         Residential facilities, separately for 60 girls &amp; 60 boys. ·         SE School cum Day Care Centre with a capacity for 150 CwD to include non-residents to include an early intervention centre, class rooms, a sensory room, a library, a computer laboratory, and vocational training and therapeutic services.      
 The focus on campus is on functional academics; language and communication skills; and the acquiring of daily living, house-hold, domestic &amp; vocational skills. The emphasis, throughout, is on ‘inclusive’ learning and activity.
