Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society (SHEOWS) is a "home away from home" for the abandoned elderly of our country. The organization is registered under the Society Registration Act of 1860 and the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act, of 1976. Since the last 20 years we have been providing free shelter, food, cloth, medical care, love, and affection to the destitute, abandoned, homeless, and PWD (Person with disability) elderlies with the help of generous and mindful people of our community.The Old Age Homes stand with a Special Care Unit, 24X7 Doctors and nurses, Physiotherapy unit, Pathology lab, Digital X-ray monitoring machine, an in-house Pharmacy, and all the necessary equipment required to treat any sort of illness or disease. All these facilities are provided to the elderly completely free of cost. Most of these elders are picked up from the streets of Delhi NCR or brought in by Police/hospital authorities.Our caregivers facilitate a homely environment in the Ashrams and ensure the socio-emotional well-being of the beneficiaries. SHEOWS is currently running 2 old age homes , Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram of Delhi and Garhmukhteshwar, since 2003 &amp; 2008 respectively. These are the homes of 600 elderly residents who were found alone and abandoned, left to die on the streets. In the last 20 years, we have served over 7,000 elders out of which more than 2,600 have been rehabilitated back to home.The aim is to serve every destitute, orphan, needy, abandoned, specially challenged elderly by providing them free shelter, food, clothes, healthcare, love, and respect. We uphold a strong belief that helping aged people and spreading awareness of elderly care would not only give them a new life but also reduce the issue of elder abuse in society.We believe in the notion of “Vasudeva Kutumbakam” which means that the whole world is our family and this inspires us to serve every needy old aged person as our own family member. As per Census 2011, the number of indigent elders in India of Indigent elderly destitute who are homeless or deserted by the families) is 18 lacs (0.18 Crore) and growing. With COVID-19 pandemic maximizing the risk to elderly lives across the world, there is desperate need for the society to focus on the indigent elderly of the society. With the COVID-19 pandemic worsening the risk to the lives of these elderly, we at SHEOWS are trying to save maximum lives by conducting rescue of such elderly who are homeless, abandoned, homeless and a victim of elderly abuse and abandonment. At the same time, out of every 10 elderly couples in India, more than 6 are forced by their children (source link - <a href="https://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2009/07/old-age-problems-india/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2009/07/old-age-problems-india/</a>)  to leave their homes leaving a large number of elderlies abandoned on the streets. SHEOWS for the last 18 years is working on the cause of saving the elderly who are dying on the roadsides, footpaths etc. as presently there are no old age homes for paralytic, disabled and bedridden elderly who provide comprehensive support to them under one roof. 
 SHEOWS aims to conduct rescue operations across Delhi/NCR and rural areas of Uttar Pradesh and provide them with not only the basic facilities like food, shelter, clothing but also comprehensive medical care facilities like - <ul><li>General Health Check-ups </li><li>Availability of a neurologist</li><li>Facility of an SCU (equipped with multiparameter monitors, oxygen concentrators, bi-pap machine, etc.)</li><li>24X7 nurses </li><li>Caregiver facility (as all the residents of the old age home are either fully/partially dependent)</li><li>Physiotherapy</li><li>Pathological testing </li><li>SOS treatment </li><li>X-ray facility </li><li>In-house pharmacy </li></ul> 
 The impact that we wish to create is to save maximum indigent elderly lives. Provide social security and basic amenities along with comprehensive medical care facilities to the once abandoned and homeless elderly (all free of cost). The project will enable reduction in mortality rate of such population and enable an improved quality of life and dignity to the indigent elderly population. The project will provide medical care benefits to those who once lived without food, shelter and clothing. It will improve the physical and mental health of the abandoned elderly rescued by SHEOWS. The most at-risk population amidst the COVID-19 population will be served and saved through this project that is elderly who are sixty years and above, without food/clothing/shelter, co-morbid and a victim of elderly abuse and abandonment.

Healthcare for the abandoned, destitute and homeless elderly

Our nation used to be one that is rooted in tradition and culture. One that prides itself in respecting our elders, related or not. But sadly, the society is no longer aligning along these lines of value and culture.  According to the 2011 census, more than 18 million elderlies are abandoned in India with no way home. There has been a  rapid rise in the aging population which is  accompanied by a silently growing pressure on all aspects of care for older persons – financial, health and shelter. This pressure has considerably increased after the pandemic. Apart from this, the current working culture  and a dynamic shift towards nuclear family patterns has all the more increased elderly abandonment. As a result, frail and ailing elderly are found on the roadsides, being vulnerable to several mishappenings and helplessly awaiting their end. 
 <a href="https://www.sheows.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">SHEOWS</a> (Saint Hardyal Educational &amp; Orphans Welfare Society) strives to make India a better and safer place for the elderly to live. Our aim is to mitigate the sufferings of abandoned elderly, rescue them from the streets and work towards providing them a safe and comfortable shelter where they are properly fed and their medical needs are taken care of-all free of cost!We are currently working tirelessly to spread our services across the states of Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. SHEOWS has successfully served more than 7000 elderly till date. Currently we are a home to 600 people, who were rescued in an extremely miserable condition. SHEOWS aims to create a hospitable and caring environment for such people where they can overcome the trauma they suffered and lead a happy and dignified life. 
 In the last 20 years we have rescued around 7000 elderlies out of which more than 2,600 have been rehabilitated.
