“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, 250 of the children rescued from abuse and exploitation are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Satya Special School was started in 2003 as a rehabilitation centre offering free therapeutic and academic facilitation to 20 children with special needs, now has 1029 children under its umbrella. Satya started its journey with a single building, now has ten centres including three Village centres, Mobile Therapy units covering 44 villages, four upcoming Satellite centres, Prosthetics and Orthotics unit and over 100 staff. Each child is assessed according to their individual and psychological capabilities and training is provided based on their needs. The school has specialized trained staff engaged in various programs in education, early intervention, therapy, livelihoods, and advocacy, ultimately aiming for the inclusion of children with disabilities.A GuideStar Platinum NGO, Satya has received numerous accolades for its work, including the Model of Excellence Award for Early Childhood Care by the University of Oregon, US; the 2018 World Cerebral Palsy Day Award, and was featured as a model NGO in the Dasra- Bank of America report on disability.

Running our special school is not easy, but we're committed to improving the lives of the most vulnerable group in society: children with disabilities. Facing multiple issues, but mostly neglect, Satya Special School is a beacon of hope for these kids and their parents. Over the past financial year, we've arranged transportation for 53 children to our school from nearby areas. Also, we provided daily snacks to 69 children throughout the year, because hungry kids can't study. Please support us in our efforts to change the world, one life at a time. With your help, we arranged multiple vans to ferry kids from all over inaccessible villages in Tamil Nadu to their destination: a school specifically designed to cater to their needs and give them the best chance of success in life. With all these kids in one place, it is heartwarming to see the pace at which they adapt to their new environment and develop their social and intellectual skills. Furthermore, with the transport barrier broken down, the kids can access therapeutic services otherwise unavailable to them. Do you see a person with intellectual disabilities in a café or out for a movie? Ever wondered why? One of the main reasons is the severe lack of opportunities, both infrastructure and otherwise, for the disabled and the non-disabled to interact and understand each other better. This leads to several problems: low awareness among the general public about intellectual disability, which leaches on to the spheres of education, employment, and even public policy. It also has the effect of low self-esteem among people with disabilities.Also, work in the disability sector has often been charity-driven, and a rights approach is often not looked at. This leads to the disabled always being the receiver of largesse. However, the disabled can contribute so much with the right tools and resources. 
 Satya Special School wants to change this through AATRAL, an activity centre for the general public where our youth with disabilities lead fun activities like baking, quilling, art, and dancing, for a fee.This will also flip the giver-receiver equation, for interactions of mutual respect, dignity, and understanding.As a first step, we have already collaborated with Eat my Cake! to train eight of our students in baking special goods. Eat my Cake! is a café headed by Ms. Saloua Sahl from Morocco, who visited Pondicherry two years ago and made a home here. Her café is fondly appreciated by both tourists and locals.<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/be52b812-9017-4575-a6aa-a5842ca53b31.jpeg" width="476" style="display:block;margin:auto" />For art and craft, our children are trained in painting, quilling and weaving. And who does not want to sing and dance!<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/2cff98ff-c9e4-4467-9666-2d24fb0ed932.jpeg" width="478" style="display:block;margin:auto" />Patrons will pay to have the experience of baking their own signature dish, or making a personalized craft item. It will be a step forward in showcasing the capabilities of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, while creating spaces for interaction and understanding.This centre will create partnerships with schools in Puducherry, and across the hospitality sector.The activity leaders (our youth with disabilities) will be paid a stipend for their work.  
 AATRAL will help bring to the fore the abilities of the disabilities. It will help youth with disabilities earn a living. More importantly, it will raise awareness about disability and people with disabilities in young children in the state, and among people from all over the country.

AATRAL: An activity space where youth with disabilities teach you to bake, quill, paint, and dance!

Mothers of children with special needs often bear the brunt of the disability: fathers often desert the mother and the child, and regular employment with a child with special needs becomes difficult. Mothers are left with no real way to earn a steady income, and increases their economic dependence. The children too, are caught in the cycle, unable to live a dignified independent life. 
 Our Livelihoods Project, DIGNITY, helps mothers of children with special needs not just have a livelihood for themselves, but also involve their children, and other youth with disabilities in their businesses. DIGNITY helps set up small businesses for these women, so that they can continue earning and working, while providing a way for other youth with disabilities to also create a livelihood for themselves. DIGNITY provides the seed capital and training to help the women start and run businesses. We also help create marketing channels where required. Examples of enterprises include: idiappam flour making, basket weaving, petty shop, etc. 
 With DIGNITY, women and youth with disabilities will earn a livelihood and learn important life skills to help them in their lives. We plan to provide the seed money for fifteen (15) businesses for starters, and request your help for the same. With an average of two helpers per business, the project will help 45 people with their livelihoods.

DIGNITY: Livelihoods for Special Mothers

The financial impact of disability in a child on the family/household is significant. If the average monthly expenditure on a child without disabilities is Rs 500, the expenditure on a child with special needs is 4 – 5 times or higher depending on the nature of disability and the related medical &amp; health conditions. Even families from the higher income group find disability management for a child with special needs a huge burden on their financial situation.  Satya Special School caters to a large number of CWSNs and to ensure continued intervention for these children we propose individual sponsorship plan where an individual/family or a group sponsors a child for an year. 
 HOW WILL SPONSORING MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE CHILD : 1.        Provide need based intervention that are otherwise out of the reach of the lower strata of society2.        The needed assistive devices like wheel chairs, calipers, crutches that will help the child become independent will be made available to the child3.        Supplementary nutrition will be provided to the children to aid in general health4.        The complete financial responsibility for intervention will be taken care of, reducing the Mother’s stress leaving her some freedom to play the role of a co-therapist to help the child improve his/her condition5.        Focus on holistic development covering all aspects of development and growth of the CWSN, ensuring better successYou will receive a yearly update on the various activities at Satya. Children with disabilities are often less a priority in the family when selecting the share of spends on their needs. The sponsorship programme removes a large part of the financial burden from the parents and ensures the child remains in school and continues to get the much needed intervention services without which independent daily living would become impossible. 
 825 children (0-6 years) in special need are provided with therapy, special education, aids and appliances to become independent in daily living activities400 primary care givers are provided with training on better management of the child200 community stakeholder namely doctors, nurses and other medical staff are trained on early identification of special need to a child150 differently able adults are provided with skill training support for employment opportunities80 primary care givers are trained to management/support person with disability 200 stakeholders focusing corporate staff and other organization staff are trained onearly identification of special need to a child

HELPING A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Children with special needs do not receive appropriate individualized therapy and education in Pondicherry. Their development is further delayed without proper therapy. Children with special needs who can lead independent lives as contributing members of society are isolated and their possible growth is stunted. In rural Pondicherry, there are many superstitions surrounding disability, especially intellectual and developmental disabilities. 
 Satya Special School's programs combine modern, traditional, and alternative therapies for optimal development of each child with special needs. With a trained team of special educators, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and others such as musicians, artists, and performers, Satya's programs help multiply the effect of each kind of intervention.We provide children with the following therapies and resources for development: <ol><li>Special education</li><li>Physiotherapy</li><li>Occupational Therapy</li><li>Speech Therapy</li><li>Sensory Integration</li><li>Hydrotherapy</li><li>Aquatherapy</li><li>Music therapy</li><li>Art therapy</li><li>Drama therapy</li><li>Hobbies</li><li>Vocational training</li><li>Placement </li></ol>and any resource that will help the child and/or the parents access a better life for the child. Many of the children at our centres go on to be integrated into mainstream schools, and some of them move on to our vocational centres for training.We have around 1100 children across our ten centres, including three village centres. While some of the projects are funded, we need help for about 50 children urgently. 
 We wish to provide therapy that will enable the 50 children to reach their maximum potential: be it performing their own Activities of Daily Living, graduating Class 10 under National Open Schooling, or moving on to study a vocation at the community college.We want each child to receive all the resources necessary to enable their maximum development. We wish to mainstream at least 5 of these 50 children in government or private schools.
