India is home to 6% of the world’s poor, with 130 million of her children relying on the government education system to escape poverty cycles and gain an opportunity to thrive in life. Yet, the 10.8 million government schools  fail to deliver quality learning as most remain under-budgeted and understaffed. This leaves the enablers of the system without the capacity, mindset, and learning tools to provide high-quality learning, denying India’s children the opportunity to use the power of education to overcome social inequity and impoverishment. 
 Simple Education Foundation (SEF) is on a mission to reinvent India’s government education system by providing high-quality learning to all children to fulfil its vision of empowering children to build a better tomorrow. SEF engages with either one or all key enablers that impact the life and learning of a child - Principals, Educators, and Parents and builds their capacity to be aware, invested, and empowered in taking ownership of their schools and putting it on the path of excellence for every child's holistic development.Directly at the school level, in 2022-23 SEF will work with 11 schools to demonstrate them as Centres of Excellence across Delhi (urban) and Uttrakhand (rural), providing high-quality learning to over 1600 children.At a systems level, we are working with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi on an educator development program, Udaan, which influences 80,000 public educators from 2,500 schools in delivering high-quality learning to 25,00,000 children over 3 years. 
 SEF prepares the enablers of learning to provide high-quality learning by integrating 21st century skills &amp; socio-emotional skills with academic learning, daily. Hence transforming government schools in learning, leadership and culture. In the face of Covid and beyond, multiple smiles were wiped away from the faces of children as they struggled to keep up with the increasing learning gap. <blockquote>Lack of excellent educators. Supportive systems &amp; High-quality Learning. </blockquote>While EVERY CHILD deserves an educator who:<ul><li>Embodies empathy and acceptance</li><li>Actively demonstrates skill, curiosity &amp; passion for student learning and</li><li>Creates a safe &amp; inspiring space for children to make their dreams come true</li></ul>The reality is far from it.<blockquote>There are roadblocks in educators’ paths to excellence. Right from the level of policy to on-ground action, gaps in skills, leadership and mindset thwart the development of educators who can lead high-quality learning spaces. </blockquote>Systemic shortcomings disempowering educators today:<ul><li>Gap in policy creation, between service need (student-centeredness) and service delivery (holistic education)</li><li>Lack of an ecosystem for teachers to thrive in</li></ul>These have a direct impact on an educator’s ability and willingness to embody dimensions of high-quality learning inside classrooms.<ul><li>They have motivation (intrinsic and/or extrinsic) or a sense of purpose, often arising from administrative work pressures</li><li>Being an excellent teacher is not a priority</li><li>Teachers themselves have very few spaces to receive or experience holistic and high-quality learning as our educators are trained more on content delivery as compared to developing and integrating core 21st-century competencies. This limits an educator’s ability to understand their social-emotional needs.</li></ul> 
 In their professional life, 1 educator holds the potential to impact 1500 children (Maple Advisory). Secure every child’s right to an excellent educator

10 years old Saloni's parents did not get a chance to go to school, but they dream of a better future for their daughter and believe that education is the only way to make that dream a reality. Saloni’s parents, much like millions of parents in India, send their child to a nearby government school, with this hope that their child is learning well and is getting an opportunity that was denied to them.But the truth is quite opposite to that; Saloni can barely identify basic Hindi alphabets and cannot solve simple Math problems like dividing 150 by 2, or read basic sentences like “I walk down the lane. It is a narrow lane.”, even after being in school for 6 years. Saloni is not alone, this is the harsh reality for nearly 113 million children in our country. The government schools are often ill-equipped, in terms of teacher development, curriculum, holistic development, community engagement, etc. to impact these students 
 At SEF, we believe that this problem needs a complete transformation of the government schools from within. And this solution needs to be owned and led by those who are directly impacted by the problem.In 2016, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) identified these problems and started a School Quality Enhancement Program, to transform public schools in New Delhi. SEF is a partner organization working along with SDMC to improve the conditions of public schools and advocate for changes that should become a part of the government policy, in order to create a sustainable change in the status of education in the state and the country.Through this Whole School Transformation Project, our team works with 4 key stakeholders to transform the teaching and learning practices inside government school. We focus on:<ul><li>Building Student Leadership</li><li>Strengthening Instructional Leadership &amp; Teacher Development</li><li>Building an invested community of parents</li><li>Streamlining administrative practices inside the schools</li></ul>This equips us to transform underperforming public schools into centers of excellence that will enable the government to fix gaps in our public education system and empower our children to better tomorrow. 
 Over the last 4 years, SEF has reached out to over 80,000 teachers and directly worked with 150 teachers and 700 students across 3 states in India.With the current SQEP partnership with the government In Delhi, we will involve 500 children and 13 teachers across 2 government schools.Our students were exposed to a diverse range of skills like music, public speaking, storytelling, sports, and even farming. Meanwhile, our government school teachers were supported with continuous leadership and professional development training workshops from our end. Within the first year of support, our parent community across our Simple Schools became more active and deeply invested in how they can be better guides and mentors for their children at home.We have also measured the following impact over the past year:Our students have mastered more than 50% of the grade level math content taught to them in the 2017-2018 academic year.Increased enrollment and 82% attendance in all our classroomsAll our teachers have shown an average increase of 1 level (5 level scale) on our Teacher Effectiveness Rubric.

Simple Schools: Delhi 

Nearly 113 million children in India study in government schools. But their challenge is not access to schools anymore. Their challenge is access to their fundamental right - which is their right to quality education. A recent study conducted by ASER shows that 2 out of 4 children studying in 5th grade in government schools cannot read from a Grade 2 English textbook. Similarly, about 45% of primary grade students struggle with simple mathematical operations like division and subtraction. The gap is not in their understanding, the gap is in the way they’re being taught. There is no focus on foundational learning, where concepts are missing from their knowledge and they are only being trained to be passive rote learners. 
 Now, imagine if these very children are able to get the foundational learning opportunities they actually deserve. Imagine if their teachers are able to lead their classrooms the way they envision it, without the constraints of innovative resources. Imagine if all schools are joyful learning spaces, no matter where they are. This is what we do at Simple Education Foundation. We work on making our imagination a reality one day, for all children, all teachers and all schools everywhere in India.And we do this by empowering those key stakeholders who are impacted the most by this gap in quality education - teachers, principals, parents and students themselves. Our whole school transformation program is called ‘Simple Schools’ and we work with government schools in low-income communities across the urban and rural landscape in North India. Our goal is to equip all our partner schools with diverse high-quality teaching and learning resources and opportunities and transform them into centers of learning excellence. Our program is immersive and in-depth as we focus on the growth of each stakeholder and the role they play in transforming their own school community. 
 Currently, we work with 4 government schools, impacting over 1000 children across 26 classrooms. In less than 3 years, we’ve seen our Simple Schools transform by ensuring 75% of our children are reading at grade level.Our mission of transforming the public school system in India needs your support. In 2016, we began working with the local communities of the Gular Dogi region of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. We witnessed poor learning levels across all grades, not just in literacy but also in basic foundational numeracy. We soon realized this was the reality in almost all government schools in the region and recent ASER reports show that this learning gap begins as early as Grade 1, with only 2 out of 10 students actually being able to read as per their grade level. Children in the region rely on Government Schools for their education and travel almost 2 hours on average to attend school. However, there they are met with schools riddled with low-quality learning practices, with teachers and school administration apathetic towards education. Further, with parents lacking the awareness of what high-quality learning looks like, the investment and demand for quality learning have been continuously dwindling, leaving children robbed of their fundamental right to quality education. This lack of high-quality learning in rural parts of our country is leaving our children under-prepared to make life choices for themselves that can lead them to a path of dignity. 
 With a need to redesign conversations with the community, we powered our efforts to bring Pathshala, our ‘Rural Education Transformation’ program to life. With a vision of ensuring holistic learning for children living in the villages, we set up a community-led program operating within the Government Senior Secondary School. Through this intervention, we invest and empower the community as a whole to drive change within the learning ecosystem. Working inside and outside the school, ensuring every child receives support for their wellbeing and overall development.  Our program intervention is anchored in creating meaningful experiences for children through:<ol><li>Learning Support to bridge academic gaps and strengthen every child’s well-being. We do this by offering Foundational Literacy and Numeracy sessions integrated with Social-Emotional Learning.</li><li>Bridging Access to ensure learning equity. We do this by setting up an Offline and Digital Library to provide educational books, stories, and digital literacy</li><li>Unlocking Opportunities to build student leadership and equip children with 21st Century Skills. We do this through opportunity Workshops to enhance a child’s exposure to Art, Music, Theatre , and Career Development. In addition, we work on community development by investing in local youth and community champions to become changemakers</li></ol> 
 Our program has been operating for children enrolled across Grade 6 to 10 and has shown promising outcomes. We have witnessed the growth of many students like Neha, who at the beginning of the first year was not able to comfortably read at her grade level. Despite being in Grade 8 she had issues in comprehending Grade 1 or 2 English text. However, owing to her exceptional motivation and engagement within three years she was able to raise her learning levels. Today, she is able to comprehend and meaningfully engage with grade-level text. She has also joined our efforts to spread awareness through participation in our adult literacy programs. A few other successes our program has witnessed include:<ol><li>Children leading social transformation projects such as ‘The Laali Project’ to end the stigma around menstruation and spread awareness about menstrual hygiene. This in turn has transformed parents’ attitude towards their children’s capability.</li><li>The program was selected for the Bili Language International Exchange, giving our students access to a unique language learning experience.</li><li>The region's first technology-based learning lab was set up, where the Google Bolo Reading Program witnessed the highest student participation</li></ol>This year we hope to expand our reach, with Sashakt Prathmik, meaning an empowered primary, to support 7 government primary schools catering to 13 villages in the Gulardogi area of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. This project will directly benefit more than 500 students. Our experience with Secondary Schools in the region has helped us identify key problem areas in learning and we aim to strengthen the local government primary schools to solve these key learning gaps.

Pathshala

Founded with the belief 'Where we are born should not decide the course of our destiny', we work to ensure every child has an equal learning opportunity, regardless of a child's social or economic background. Hence, Simple Education Foundation (SEF), is reinventing India's government schools by ensuring high-quality learning for all children, giving them a chance to build a better tomorrow.By coaching and mentoring one or all key enablers that impact the life and learning of a child - Principals, Educators, and Parents, we ensure the government school ecosystem takes ownership of their schools and puts the school on the path of excellence for every child's holistic development. Through SEF’s intervention children receive high-quality learning rooted in the Head, Heart, Hand, and Soul that prioritises the integration of 21st-century skills &amp; socio-emotional skills with academic learning daily.Currently, we are demonstrating 10 Government Schools across Delhi &amp; Uttarakhand as Centres of Excellence, serving close to 1700 children. In addition, at the Systems Level, we are working with SCERT, Delhi to implement a state-wide coaching and teacher development program for 80,000 teachers serving over 25 lac children in the state.

It's been a few months since you donated, and we are eager to share that since then, our #TogetherForRural initiative at Pathshala in Gular Dogi, Uttarakhand, has only strengthened.  Primary and secondary schools in the region have been reopening in a phased manner owing to COVID. Hence, our operations and pilots have also been tested, keeping in mind the current reality.  Over the last few months, our community-driven Pathshala Learning Centre has remained a continuous source of meaningful learning for children and served as a platform for testing our programs and curriculum. We expanded our reach to Grades 4 and 5 and now have over 200 children actively engaging across our initiatives, a testament to the community's belief in our work. Here are a few ongoing developments- Career Development workshops for our secondary school children are also underway to ensure they have access to opportunities as their urban counterparts. In addition, children have been exploring careers in journalism and building skills through fellowships and learning labs. Launched a progression based initiative that leverages short-term courses to build confidence, exposure and English language skills in children, has helped children explore their potential and become role models of learning within their community. The curriculum starts for children as early as 4th Grade. Going forward, we will be utilizing our insights from these initiatives towards expanding our network of schools and communities we serve.  Thank you for making this possible!
