I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Snehwan is a non-profit organization based near Alandi, Pune, Maharashtra. Our aim is to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for the less fortunate children of farmers and poor families. Snehwan is a movement for those children who are deprived of learning due to adverse situations and surroundings. We believe education is a gift of life; it is the only way to improve the life of underprivileged children, forever. Snehwan provides education, living accommodation and job training for children of farmers who have committed suicide, laborer's in the farm and economically underprivileged farmers. Journey started in 2015 with 18 children is now taking care of 180 children of the age group 10 to 22 year. Along with quality education and schooling, we teach them skill based education, also we guide and prepare these children for competitive exams. Between April '25 and September '25, we continued to care for 70 children who had nowhere else to turn by providing shelter, three nutritious meals daily, as well as conducting 150 hours of science, math, and computer classes to facilitate their timely education. For example, Santosh's (name changed) father from Latur district was struggling to pay off his debts and was contemplating taking his own life, but with the help of Snehwan, the family was able to continue Santosh's education and get respite from their troubles. It is difficult to imagine the plight of young children whose parents perform the unthinkable. A parent is supposed to be a caretaker, disciplinarian, and provider for their child; to the maximum of their abilities and for as long as they are able. But what happens when a child loses their parent, that too in the worst way imaginable? 8-year old Saisha (name changed) knows the answer to that question all too well. Not only was she forced to live through the suicide of her father, but she also had to stop going to school to pick up work as a laborer on a farm just to support her family and pay off her father's debts. In 2023, Saisha was rescued and adopted by Snehwan, who provided her with a loving home. She flourishes in academics, yoga, computer science, and music, and dreams of one day being a successful IT professional. Saisha is a remarkable student who now pursues the second standard. Snehwan has gifted her the opportunity to improve her station in life and create a better future for herself. Just like Saisha, Snehwan has rescued lots of children who would have otherwise suffered severe hardship. It is only through our efforts and our generous donors' backing that we can rescue these children and provide a better life for them. We need to funds to build a new hostel capable of fulfilling the needs of over 100 children and give them the space and resources to mature. Beneficiaries are selected based on specific criteria, including an annual family income of less than one lakh rupees. The project offers comprehensive support from the age of 6 to 18+, encompassing education, health, medical care, and livelihood assistance. Snehwan distinguishes itself through sustainable practices, utilizing solar-powered facilities, implementing rainwater harvesting, and converting cow dung into gas. Furthermore, the administration, finance, and operations are efficiently managed by senior beneficiaries. The project boasts a range of facilities, including a library, science lab, and livelihood skills training center, with dedicated teachers providing extra instruction to the children after regular school hours. During our visit, 1st-year BCA students expressed their satisfaction, characterizing Snehwan as a "family away from family." Snehwan is currently in the process of constructing a new hostel for boys and an upcoming one for girls. What about the families and children the farmers leave behind? They are left to struggle in the darkness, having no hope of a good life or a future! Don’t these kids deserve love, care, and safety? Don’t they have the right to decent education and a normal life?</li><li>Climate change is real, and its effects across the globe are evident. While scientists are looking for ways to minimize the damage, severe drought in Marathwada and Vidarbha regions in Maharashtra, and has affected 90 lakh farmers after a drought was declared in the state in more than 29,000 villages.</li><li>While several public figures and activists have cranked up their philanthropic activities to prevent farmer suicides and create amenities to fix the problem on hand, there’s someone who’s been working silently looking for opportunities to brighten the future of the community of farmers.</li></ul>

Having seen the same poverty they have, we want them to learn more and most of all, become better human beings. We don’t want to create more Job seekers in society, we want to create Job Creator. We are working on to build the future of India, as we are working for farmer’s children.</li><li>We have started to teach them Agriculture based food processing business from the childhood. So that they can use their education to start their own start-up to support the small village farmers. We have children from 6 districts and 20 villages of Maharashtra in Snehwan. It will help to create the employment and to help the farmers in India.</li><li>In first phase we going to teach them Dairy farming, Preparing Tomato Sauce, Various Masala, Oil, Turmeric Powder, Papad Industry Etc. We need support to setup the machines and all. We have already started Gaushala to teach Organic farming, composting and milk product to children.  </li></ul>
