“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. The Foundation is currently working with two centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad: Child Care Centre &amp; Treatment center. Freedom Foundation’s childcare programs stem from a belief system that every child has a right to their childhood – a hopeful existence free of exploitation, violence, neglect, and illness and extreme poverty. Children need education, health services, consistent support systems as well as love, hope, and encouragement; all these things and more are required in order to experience childhood to the fullest and to eventually develop into healthy, capable adults. The Foundation endeavors to protect and uphold the rights of marginalized children especially those living with / affected by HIV and empowers them – most of who are from economically poor backgrounds and are thus vulnerable to exploitation. The child care initiative of the Foundation was a response to the disease, death, and abandonment that children faced after the demise of their parents. The disease and financial burden caused by HIV on the family make the children infected/affected vulnerable to various social evils like child labor and trafficking to sex work and other sexual abuse. By enhancing access to treatment and psycho-social care, the Foundation ensures that the children while remaining healthy to continue to pursue education and life skills training and are thus protected from these threats.The community program works towards reducing mortality and preserving the quality of life among PLHIVs. Having the adults survive would mean that the futures of the children are secured. It would mean a lesser number of children having a single parent or being orphaned, having to drop out of school or being forced into child labor and other issues. The nutrition program helps to give nutritious food to children of HIV+ve widows(60 number) by giving nutrition kit every quarter. Partial education support is given to 30 girl children who are infected or affected by HIV.

Freedom Foundation was started in 1992 by (late) Karl Sequeira and Dr. Ashok Rau in the year 1992 and registered as a Charitable Trust (Indian Trust Act 1882) in 1993 to bring about an innovative and pioneering paradigm shift in the way issues related to substance abuse and the HIV/AIDS sector were being addressed in India. Freedom Foundation has been the pioneers of HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse interventions in India, especially around comprehensive care, and support. Freedom Foundation is credited to have set up the first comprehensive Community based comprehensive care and support center in India at Bangalore and is recognized as a model by NACO (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India) and other national and international agencies. Freedom Foundation has worked with many organizations /partners who have supported the work over the years.Currently, the foundation is focusing on its pioneering initiative of providing comprehensive care and support for orphan children living with HIV and AIDS and developing an ecosystem of care givers:Freedom Foundation’s work with orphaned children living with HIV/AIDS stems from the belief that “No child needs to sacrifice the quality of life to an illness.” We strive to deliver and uphold the fundamental rights of the child within the family, community &amp;amp; institution. The Right to Life, Protection, and Health and Education form the four pillars of this intervention. This is achieved through 3 vertical components of:● Holistic residential care for HIV Positive Orphan children.● Education &amp;amp; Nutrition for HIV infected/affected children in the community.● Creating and establishing an ecosystem of care givers who support the development of these orphan children.Freedom Foundation does not believe in displacing a child from his/her family or extended family. As far as possible we try and support the child in the community itself with the help of care givers who could be their distant relative or some well wisher who would in turn be supported by Freedom Foundation for the care and support of the child and thus mitigating the risk of orphan hood for these children. The foundation has developed an eco-system of potential caregivers (many living with HIV/AIDS). These caregivers are trained and supported to provide a family environment for the children to grow and start an independent life and thus mitigating the risk of orphan hood for these children. The residential care program aims to provide a protected residential environment for the abandoned children living with HIV/AIDS. These children are provided wholesome nutrition, healthcare, education, and livelihood, thereby enhancing both the longevity and quality of life and becoming productive citizens of the community. These children come here at an age below 8 years and spend anywhere between 10 -15 years with Freedom Foundation.
