“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. VISHWAS is a not for profit organisation working in the field of Disability and Inclusive Development. Our mission is to create a diverse and inclusive society where every individual is ensured equal rights and opportunities in a dignified manner.In 2005, Neelam Jolly, the founder of VISHWAS started working in Sanp ki Nagli, a small village in Sohna block of Gurugram district of Haryana with a vision of an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are ensured equal rights and opportunities in a dignified manner.Now, after eighteen years of persistent work and resilience, VISHWAS is a proud team of 45 people working for the four programmes that complement each other. Communication Vishwasindia

A Mega Plantation Drive was held on 26th Sept’ 2025 at VISHWAS under PM’s Flagship Programme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”. APC Gurugram Mr. Dinesh Gulia was the Chief guest for the activity. Vishwas received 80 saplings out of which some were planted in the campus. The remaining were distributed to students to plant near their homes. The aim was to encourage them to water, nurture them and to watch them grow. Such initiatives help students to understand that plants help to improve environmental health by increasing oxygen, reducing air and noise pollution, combating climate change and preventing soil erosion. They beautify communities while promoting a connection to nature.

Plantation Drive

Daksh Varshney, an eight-year-old boy having autism spectrum disorder (ASD) currently in grade IV of VISHWAS Vidyalaya. He is a hyperactive and non-verbal child. He was identified by our Community based programme (CBP) team.&nbsp;He was extremely hyperactive and would harm himself and others too. He didn’t have sitting tolerance. After few months of therapy, he was granted admission to the Vidyalaya. The team is working towards his behavioral development. He is being involved in sports to channelize his energy. The CBP team has facilitated application of his UDID card and Disability certificate. Progress is evident from-improved sitting tolerance, his hyper activeness has reduced to some extent and he participates in the classroom activities.&nbsp;

Love and Persistence pays

VISHWAS Vidyalaya is an inclusive elementary school from Nursery to Grade VIII, recognized by the Haryana government. Children from the marginalised sections including those with disabilities are our beneficiaries. We work for holistic development of the children with a strong belief in Equal opportunity and Inclusion for all children (with and without disabilities). Latest education methods have been adopted. They gain practical experience by conducting science experiments in the lab. Educational trips give a break from the mundane and also makes the learning interesting.&nbsp;To help the children reach school, we have two school buses that are fitted with hydraulic lifts which ensure the transport of children including those with mobility issues in a safe and dignified manner.Music:&nbsp;All students are enjoying Music sessions. They are learning vocal and instrumental music. The morning assembly and celebrations have become livelier.&nbsp;They take part in competitions. This is providing them with an opportunity to showcase their talent. It is therapeutic also.Physical training: The sports teacher conducts yoga sessions and also engages the students in various kinds of sports. There is focus on both physical and mental well-being. For children with special needs (CWSNs), the physical activity is therapeutic as well. Specialised training is provided to the talented students. They are getting opportunity to participate and showcase their talent at state and national level too.Bridging technology divide: Students are using computers, laptop and tablet in classrooms. Grade VI to VIII have smart boards. This way they have access to latest technology.Therapy: CWSNs are provided therapy depending upon their specific need. We have a range of professionals- Physiotherapist, Sign language teacher and Hearing and speech impairment therapist.We don’t charge fees from our students.The annual cost of education of a child is Rs.36000.

He then went on to complete grade X and XII through NIOS. He got training in computers at our skill training.Ishank, with mild intellectual disability trained in computers and hospitality. This soft spoken, very well-mannered young boy has been very keen to become self-reliant by taking up a job.Rohtash has locomotor disability due to polio. He has been working with us since 2015 in the tailoring unit. In 2023 when this unit closed, he tried his hand at having his own tailoring unit. But with no regular supply of work, it became difficult for him to manage a family of 5.This year we have a new partner in Mitti Café (a café managed by PwDs). Through a rigorous screening and training process, all the three of them got employed in it. They are extremely happy with this new found self-reliance and financial independence. Regular training in sports is yielding results1. Lovlesh won Bronze Medal in Special Olympics, Berlin in Tennis (2023)2. Yashpal has been selected for training in Ice skating for Special Olympics World Winter games to be held in Italy in 20253. Yashpal and Gautam won Gold medal for Haryana in Volleyball, held by Special Olympics Bharat in Gujarat4. Lovelesh won 2 Gold and 1 Silver medal in Power lifting National Championship by Special Olympic Bharat held at Kanpur 5.Khushi &amp; Neeru won 1st place in 100m race in SOB Athletics, Haryana
