If they are ill or injured, they are never given treatment. They are tied up in small spaces. Where there is space barely for 10, they keep 20, 30 or even 40 animals. And these animals spend their entire life in these painful conditions", says Dr Asher Jesudoss, animal welfare activist, who fights against the abuse of farmed animals.According to him, several crude, illegal and violent methods/practices are used to extract milk from cattle, which leave thousands with illnesses. “Labour pains are induced in cattle by injecting drugs; they are made to forcefully let down milk twice a day unnaturally. Their calves are pulled away and are not allowed to drink their mother’s milk. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Barua who is lovingly called ‘Sir’ and ‘Deuta’ (father in Assamese) by the residents of Seneh. With your help, 80-year-old Group Captain Barua can fulfill his mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless women from dying on the streets, alone. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. A two-month lockdown has hit the forest dwelling fringe communities hard. Owing to their remote location and the disrupted supply chain, these communities lack access to even basic commodities like food grain. In cyclone hit West Bengal, the problems have increased twofold. Amidst the pandemic, the fiercest storm in decades, has rendered people homeless.  
 Our teams are reaching out to these communities, in and around our project sites, throughout the country. We are distributing food grain, sanitizers and masks. In the coming few weeks, we aim to reach out to 1750 families in 5 villages in West Bengal, Assam and Jammu &amp;Kashmir. The families will receive provisions for a month. Additionally, we are also raising funds for procuring PPE kits for our field staff. We want to ensure that they are accorded the highest degree of safety, as they venture out in service of nature and its denizens.  
 Communities are an integral part of our forests and since time immemorial, have helped conserve biodiversity. In these trying times, Wildlife Trust of India pledges to stand by them. Through this effort, we want to reach out to these vulnerable people, who have supported us in our efforts to conserve the natural heritage of India. We want to ensure they have access to the basic necessities of life.

As human population expand and natural habitats disappear, people and animals are increasingly coming closer and competing for living space and food. While animals are getting injured and more often killed, local communities dwelling in forest fringes also lose their lives and crop produce worth crores of money. Today, human-wildlife conflict mainly occurs the lack of tolerance towards the mere presence of a wild animal near human habitation, leading to an aversion towards wildlife resulting in retaliatory killings, poisoning and electrocution of animals. Expecting free-ranging animals to abide by man-made fences and boundaries shows our poor sense of understanding and value for biodiversity today. Such perceptions can only be altered through long-term education and sensitization initiatives, specifically tailored to enhance human-animal coexistence. 
 Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), through its various projects, aims at sensitizing local communities towards the reasons for conflict and how it can be minimized through simple behavioural changes. These initiatives not only attempt to impart vital information that can help reduce conflict with wildlife but also create a lasting rapport with the locals, thus garnering crucial support during on-ground mitigation activities. Sensitizing communities has proven to be a successful conservation endeavour for WTI many a time. The team has educated fishermen off the coast of Gujarat to prevent slaughtering of the Whale Shark. The Nyishi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh has also been sensitized to stop hunting hornbills for their beaks- the beak being an adornment for their traditional headgear. The Adi tribe, also from Arunachal Pradesh, has now put an end to their traditional practice of hunting wild animals en masse, thanks to WTI’s sensitization programme. 
 Sensitization has proven to be one of the most important tools for imparting conservation awareness. It not only brings together stakeholders from various strata of the society, but also ensures that a sustainable solution is formulated that can create a win-win situation for both communities and the wild animals. With the ever-increasing instances of human-wildlife conflict leading to several casualties every year, the time to act is NOW. Sensitizing the fringe communities will not only prevent further deaths, but will ensure the smooth functioning of a healthy ecosystem.
