10 NGOs in Gujarat uplifting the underprivileged

According to a report released by the World Bank, Gujarat is home to 60 million people out of which one-sixth are poor. Being the home state of Mahatma Gandhi, and his place of residence for many years, it is unfortunate that his vision of eliminating poverty has not been successful. Yet it is heartening to see the sheer number of nonprofit organizations stepping up and taking his principles of altruism forward. 

Listed below are a few of the Give’s partner NGOs in Gujarat doing their bit to alleviate poverty and help underprivileged people overcome hardships to lead a happy and dignified life.

1. Saath (Initiatives for Equity in Development)

Based in Ahmedabad, Saath is an NGO that works closely with marginalized communities. The focus areas of Saath are livelihoods, skill development, health and education, rights, urban governance, financial inclusion, rehabilitation and resettlement, and other community development initiatives. Saath runs schools that provide pre-school education and nutrition to underprivileged children from the slums of Ahmedabad. Donate money to this program to fund extra-curricular activities for underprivileged children.

2. Shree Navchetan Andhjan Mandal

Shree Navchetan Andhjan Mandal is an NGO in Gujarat that was established in 1976 by Shri Laljibhai Mepabhai Prajapati to help the blind community.  The nonprofit aims to build the confidence of its students by providing each and every differently-abled child education, health & medical care, and vocational training for rehabilitation so that they become productive members of society and earn their livelihood. A donation to this NGO can help differently-abled children lead a better life. 

3.  Gram Vikas Trust

Gram Vikas Trust operates in more than 100 villages of Bharuch district, working for child rights, education, health and hygiene, sustainable livelihood, and women empowerment. The organization provides vocational training to hundreds of students each year along with awareness of health and hygiene. Their current project aims to provide bicycles to young girls so that they can travel to and from school. Donate to this nonprofit now and gift a bicycle to enable the education of a girl child.

4. Blind Peoples Association, India

Started as a recreational club for visually impaired people, Blind Peoples Association is an NGO in Gujarat that serves people with all kinds of disabilities, including visual impairment, hearing impairment, mental retardation, orthopedic impairment, mental illness, multiple disabilities, etc. It provides comprehensive eye care services to people with eye problems in several villages around Bareja. It conducts free eye camps and surgeries for poor patients suffering from cataracts. You can donate to this NGO to gift sight to the elderly with cataract surgery.

5. Charutar Arogya Mandal (CAM)

Charutar Arogya Mandal aims to provide affordable necessary healthcare to those who need it the most. CAM works with poor cancer patients in villages around Gujarat. It is difficult for a lot of these patients to make it to hospitals due to lack of transport. Patients in need of support are given treatment and workers keep in touch with the patient’s family regularly. Support this program to give a gift of healthcare to a poor patient.

6. Samerth Charitable Trust

Started with the aim of creating a world where equal opportunities, access to resources, gender equality, democratic governance, participatory learning and respect of diverse cultures are the norm, Samerth Trust is an NGO in Gujarat that works with women and children. They cater to the educational needs of children between the ages of 3 to 6, run a counseling center for women who have experienced domestic violence and also have an information hub to teach people about government schemes. Donate money to Samerth to help change the lives bring a positive change into the lives of people. 

7. Visamo Kids Foundation

Visamo Kids is an NGO in Gujarat providing free education to children from underprivileged families. The NGO runs a residential center where they look after poor boys and girls from different districts of Gujarat. They provide a warm and safe environment for these children to grow and also give them nutritious food and support to complete their education. Help poor children through Visamo and provide him with residential care and educational support.

8. Sense International (India)

Sense International (India)’s vision is of a world in which all deafblind children and adults live in a society as active members. They provide training to people from poor backgrounds to become teachers for children with special needs. The organization has succeeded in reaching out to more than 77, 500 deafblind people and their families in the last two decades. Donate to this NGO and support the expenses of a teacher training in deafblindness.

9. Blind Welfare Council, Dahod

Blind Welfare council is an NGO in Gujarat that was created so that all differently-abled people of Dahod and Panchmahals districts have access to equal opportunities. The nonprofit provides them with a good life and aims to work towards a society that respects their rights and dignity. Since 2002, about 150 students with intellectual disabilities, and about 30 students with hearing impairment have been trained for activities of daily living and primary academics. Help poor differently-abled students through this NGO and sponsor their computer training.

10. Shikshan Ane Samaj Kalyan Kendra

Shikshan Ane Samaj Kalyan Kendra is an NGO in Gujarat dedicated to helping women through activities like health, education, women empowerment, etc. It holds workshops about the cause and effects of domestic violence and takes the issues of violence to district level authorities and lower courts. They also encourage victims to come forward and discourage men from partaking in activities that will cause harm to their spouses. Donating to this organization will help rural women fight discrimination and domestic violence.
