10 Resolutions For 2019

IT’S that time of year again when we are enthusiastic about making changes and bettering ourselves. Resolutions don’t have to be big changes, we can start with a small step.

In the coming year, let’s take those steps towards making healthier, more conscious choices not only towards ourselves but also towards our environment.

So, here are ten resolutions that will better yourself and the planet next year:

1. Phase out plastic use – just say no to disposable plastics, such as bags, cups, bottled water, straws and cutlery.

2. Volunteer – community service not only helps others but also makes you “feel good” thanks to the release of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin when we give to others.

3. Practice “daily acts of altruism” – give blood, sign up to be an organ donor, pay for a stranger’s coffee, or donate your gently used clothes or household items to a person in need.

4. Shop locally – try to buy your fresh, seasonal produce within a 100-mile radius rather than buying a fancy import from the grocery store. Supporting local farmers will save you money and cut down on your carbon footprint.

5. Choose your seafood wisely – ensure that we will have a healthy ocean ecosystem for generations to come by choosing your next seafood meal using the Know Your Fish calendar that suggests which fish to eat during certain months to prevent the overharvesting and depletion of marine life.

6. Cut down on food waste – buy and prepare only what you can eat. Compost and repackage leftovers to give to the hungry on your own or in coordination with volunteer-led Robin Hood Army.

7. Start or grow your home garden – in addition to having fresh herbs and veggies at your fingertips, you also have a place to use that compost, you’ll save money at the market, and gardening can help cut health risks, including stress.

8. Shop responsibly – make free donations when online shopping using the Sumara extension or mobile app and buy fair trade, handmade work directly from artisans locally or online.

9. Be kind – little acts of gratitude and even just noticing others through simple gestures, such as holding the door open for the person behind you or saying thank you to service staff can make a difference in someone’s day in ways you can’t imagine.

10. Take that basket full of coins you’ve collected and donate them at the end of each month. You don’t have to give big to give back.
