KINDNESS is an emotion and an action that is always in need around the world. Both children and adults appreciate and value kindness that is shown to them and their loved ones. From individuals to groups of people to entire nations, kindness can make all the difference in someone’s life and can even go so far as to save lives. While most of us know the importance of kindness, we get so caught up in our lives that we forget to make those small gestures that have the potential to go such a long way and even remain in someone’s memories for a lifetime.
Kind acts can be carried out in more ways that we can imagine and are not restricted to random acts of kindness for others. We can show:
- kindness to ourselves
- kindness to friends and family
- kindness to strangers
- kindness to animals
- kindness to the environment
When we recognize that our thoughts, words and actions have a ripple effect on the world around us, we can be more conscious of our impact.
Here are 10 ways to spread kindness on World Kindness Day!
Be kind to yourself
When it comes to kindness, ourselves is not what comes to mind first. But kindness starts with ourselves. We all go through ups and downs in life. But when you are patient with yourself, appreciate your accomplishments and have positive self-esteem, you are better able to form healthy relationships and enjoy your life.
Check in on an old friend
Throughout our lives, we cultivate relationships with schoolmates, neighbors or colleagues but we can sometimes lose touch. When you check in on someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, you are doing your part to make that person feel special – a feeling that person is likely to reciprocate!
Compliment someone
Being appreciated is a positive feeling that makes us feel proud of our accomplishments and better about ourselves. If there is someone you know who could use an uplifting word, pay them a compliment and do your part to put a smile on their face and let them know that you appreciate them.
Be kind to animals
Animals around us are in need of the basic things in life: shelter, water, food and a little love and care. We can provide a little comfort and compassion by leaving bowls of water and food outside for birds, dogs, cats, cows and other animals and allowing them to shelter near our homes during the harsh wind, heat and rain.
Encourage someone
All people face challenges with health, relationships, work and other areas of life and most people keep their struggles to themselves. If you can speak an encouraging word to someone, to let them know that you acknowledge their uphill task, you just might give them the strength and motivation to keep them going.
Be kind to the environment
Does kindness include the environment? Trees are home to 80% of all land animals and release the oxygen we breathe, so being considerate of our environment goes a long way in making life better for other living creatures. By not littering, smoking, wasting food or water or overusing plastics are other ways to be kind to the planet.
Be kind to strangers
In the course of the day, we pass by people we have never met and may never meet again. But in those quick interactions, we can show kindness and courteousness to a worker in a store, waiter at a restaurant or stranger on public transport. This politeness makes a big impact and shows respect to our fellow human beings.
Invest in people
Human relationships form the basis of our lives. When we make the effort to spend time with people, listen to them, have meaningful conversations and keep in touch, it is an investment that enriches our lives and the lives of others. Investing in people helps us form emotional ties that shape our personalities and mental health.
Check in on a colleague
The workplace can be challenging sometimes. With heavy workloads and tight deadlines, sometimes we are in need of a helping hand. With news still in our social media feeds over the death of a young MNC employee, checking in on a colleague and offering them your assistance can make all the difference in their lives.
Support an NGO
Helping the underprivileged is something most Indians want to do. But it might be difficult to volunteer our time or skills. It is found that 72% of Indian adults donate to charity because it helps organizations reach out to the most disadvantaged and transform their lives.
