5 NGOs supporting children with Down Syndrome

DOWN Syndrome is a developmental condition that causes intellectual and developmental disorders or disabilities. Individuals with Down Syndrome are considered persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities and performing certain tasks is more challenging for them since their mental and physical development takes place at a slower pace than others without the condition. But with support and rehabilitative therapies, people with Down Syndrome can participate in social life and accomplish their goals.

Down Syndrome is caused during the process of cell division after conception and due to the manner in which cells divide, an extra copy of the 21st chromosome is created. This leads to a fetus having 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This can be detected during pregnancy using prenatal screening tests. Individuals with Down Syndrome have challenges with regard to their attention span, memory, communication and also have distinct differences in their facial characteristics and height, making the condition identifiable.

World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21st each year and the date 21 is chosen due to its connection to the 21st chromosome that is duplicated. World Down Syndrome Day gives individuals and organizations the opportunities needed to turn the attention to Down Syndrome, the needs and challenges of individuals with Down Syndrome, recent research and discoveries that have been made in the area of care for individuals with Down Syndrome and the role of NGOs in meeting these needs, especially for individuals who are from underprivileged communities.

In India, the support and therapies that children and young people with Down Syndrome need are inaccessible to people from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds. But there are NGOs across India that offer not just the required therapies to help individuals overcome their disabilities, but also education, skills training, livelihood support and the assistance that their families need to know how to raise children with Down Syndrome. This World Syndrome Day, consider supporting NGOs that equip and empower individuals with Down Syndrome.
