5 NGOs to support this Holi

HOLI is a season of happiness and a time when people do more than celebrate with their loved ones. It is a time to share the spirit of celebration with others through sprinkling or throwing colored powder and water on others, causing laughter and the favor being returned. Holi is called the Festival of Colors and is celebrated to herald the coming of spring. The festival has a deep spiritual significance and this includes the use of bright and vibrant colors to express the joy that is felt during the week of Holi across India and around the world.

In 2025, Holi is celebrated on March 14th and the spirit of sharing with others is one of the most important things that people focus on. In India, there are millions of people who will welcome the Holi season with great happiness despite their immense suffering. The poor and disadvantaged lack things as basic as a roof over their heads, nutritious food to eat, medical attention for their sicknesses and the chance to go to school. This Holi, these 5 NGOs are focusing on giving back to men, women and children with the greatest need.

Here are 5 NGOs to support this Holi:

Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad

Helping children with visual impairments is a mission that has a deep and personal significance to the founder of Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad. He is a blind individual whose life turned upside down when he was just a teenager and suffered from an accident that made him blind. He noticed not just the suffering but also the lack of opportunities for children with visual impairments, especially girls. These children are often denied an education and have no avenue to improve their lives and their futures, which are doomed to darkness.

Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad is an organization based in Delhi that provides one of the strongest tools of empowerment for children with disabilities: education. In educating blind girls, the organization is placing them on a platform to improve their futures by being equipped with skills to seek employment when they are older. The NGO also provides the children with shelter, nutrition and access to medical care. The goal of the NGO is to give these underprivileged children independent and dignified lives. Akshaya Trust

For most people, old age is a time to look forward to spending each moment with children and grandchildren. It is a time when a person can enjoy their retired years being taken care of by their loved ones – just as they once took care of their own children. But the unfortunate case for many senior citizens is that they are abused and abandoned by their own children. For reasons such as wanting money, gold or property from their elders, many people mistreat their parents and grandparents and starve them, lock them up in a room or even kick them out onto the streets.

Akshaya Trust is an NGO in Chennai in Tamil Nadu that rescues abused and abandoned elders from bad situations and shelters them in their old age home. In the home, the residents receive nutritious meals each day, medical care and have access to recreational activities, counseling and personal support to make them feel at home and give them happiness. If it is safe for the elders, the NGO reunites them with their families but if not, the seniors have a place to live well for the rest of their lives. This Holi, support Akshaya Trust:

Magic Bus India Foundation

Living in urban slum settlements is difficult. There is no proper shelter, regular meals, medical attention or access to education or employment. This is especially difficult for children who are filled with potential and purpose – yet have no opportunities to go to school and build a strong future. Their childhoods are spent without the joys that they deserve and they often become victims of child labor or even child trafficking. Generation after generation, these children remain in poverty without an end in sight to their suffering.

Magic Bus India Foundation was started to give underprivileged street children in urban slums the opportunities to succeed in the future. Founded in the 1990s in Mumbai in Maharashtra, Magic Bus India Foundation started introducing children to sports and age-appropriate activities to help them find respite from the difficulties and struggles of their lives. The NGO then started teaching them and enrolling them in schools to help them have the foundation to build their futures and get good jobs in the future with decent incomes. Swadhar Institute for Development of Women, Children

In red light districts across India, there are children whose mothers are trapped behind the doors of these oppressive and violent places. The children are often hidden away underneath beds or in separate rooms but the unbearable truth is that these children are in danger of being sexually exploited and forced into prostitution as children or when they become older. Once this happens, their childhoods are stolen from them and their lives are forever marked by abuse and exploitation without the chance of escape.

Swadhar Institute for Development of Women, Children is an organization that runs a safe home for the children of women caught in red light districts. The home provides a safe place for the children where they are provided with regular and nutritious meals and can engage in education activities at the pre-school and e-learning center. The NGO also teaches them how to take care of themselves and provides them with clothing, medical care and basic necessities. Pure Devotion Foundation

In India, the discrimination against widows has existed for centuries. In both rural and urban households, widows are shunned, restricted and oppressed by their own family members and neighbors. The reasons for widow discrimination are various but in most cases, those who are left to take care of their mothers or grandmothers do not want to be burdened with the financial responsibilities. So these women are often pushed out of their homes and onto the streets where they face hunger, starvation, declining health and abuse from strangers on the streets.

Pure Devotion Foundation is an NGO that rescues abandoned widows from the streets and cares for them in their home. The organization is located in Vrindavan, which is known to be a place where people leave their mothers and grandmothers in the hopes that pilgrims or others will care for them. The home provides shelter, food and personal care and affection for the rest of their lives. The women often suffer from diseases and other health problems but the NGO helps them with medical support. This Holi, support Pure Devotion Foundation:
