5 NGOs to support this International Human Solidarity Day

UNITY in diversity is a concept that people across India are familiar with. In school, children are taught it as an ideal to strive toward and an important part of moving forward as a nation. There are many different groups of people across India who have little to no access to their basic rights such as food, shelter, education, medical care, employment and opportunities to improve their futures for themselves and their children. These include tribal communities, children forced to work in coal mines, missing girls sold into trafficking, homeless people and individuals with neurodivergent disabilities.

International Human Solidarity Day is celebrated each December 20th to celebrate unity in diversity and raise awareness about uplifting the disadvantaged and eradicating poverty. To empower these capable groups of people, here are 5 groundbreaking NGOs across India that are working toward giving people the chance to discover their potential and live healthier and better lives:

Waatavaran

The Katkari tribals of Maharashtra have been dwelling in the forested areas of the region for generations but have been losing their lands and livelihoods. Due to discrimination against their tribe, the negative effects of climate change and rapid urban expansion into forested areas, the Katkari tribal people are forced to migrate to other places. Waatavaran is an NGO that empowers people of the Katkari tribe by providing skills training in alternate livelihoods to help them have a stable income and protect their families from being forced into bonded labor and being vulnerable to exploitation. YUVA

Families from poor communities in Jharkhand often cannot afford to send their children to school. These children are denied an education and stuck in the cycle of poverty and therefore have no choice but to accompany their families to the coal mines, where they are put to work for a meager sum of money which helps their families have a little more food to eat. Youths Union For Voluntary Action or YUVA is an NGO that takes these children out of the dangerous coal mines and gives them education, nutritious meals and medical care for the conditions they developed in the toxic coal mines. Missing Link Trust

In the Sundarbans region of West Bengal, there is a dangerous crime being committed: girls being abducted and sold into prostitution. These children are unaware of what trafficking is, the presence of traffickers and what happens to young girls who fall into their clutches. This lack of information is dangerous and leaves girls vulnerable to the dangers of trafficking. Missing Link Trust is an NGO that has educated 1.75 lakh girls in 650 schools on what trafficking is, how to identify traffickers and how to keep themselves and their friends safe. Feel Parmartham Foundation

There are millions of homeless people across India. From the streets to under bridges, homeless people are exposed to dangers such as assault, abuse, theft, sexual exploitation and the harsh cold and heat. The lack of food and medicine also increases their suffering and shortens their lives. Feel Parmatham Foundation is an NGO that rescues homeless people from the streets of Chhattisgarh and gives them shelter, medical care, nutritious meals and the chance to overcome the pain of being abandoned by their families while being cared for with affection.
