VALENTINE’S Day is all about love, sharing love and expressing love to those in our lives. Holidays such as Valentine’s Day are major celebrations and each year, we think about creative ways to show our appreciation for our loved ones. Valentine’s Day is also a time we can reach out to those beyond our circle of family and friends and share the love with people in need. In each of our communities, there are people who need a helping hand and, oftentimes, our compassion is the answer to their prayers.
Here are 5 ways to be charitable this Valentine’s Day:
Plant a tree
Planting a tree is one of the most loving ways we can show our concern for future generations and our planet. It is trees and oceans that produce the oxygen that we need to stay alive. But with increased deforestation due to expanding urban areas, our air is getting more polluted and natural disasters such as forest fires are spreading across India. It is said that we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors but we borrow it from our children. This campaign by Peepal Baba plants trees across India right from clearing the site to maintenance to ensure optimum growth. This Valentine’s Day, be charitable to future generations by planting a tree:
Send a girl to school
The girl child is one of the most disadvantaged groups of people in India. Because of the “low value” that people place on the girl child, there is discrimination against them. From this discrimination, families do not educate their daughters and as a result girls do not have opportunities to reach their potential and contribute to the world. The Every Girl In School campaign identifies underprivileged girls whose families cannot afford to send their daughters to school and covers the cost of their school fees, books, uniforms and school related expenses. This Valentine’s Day, be charitable to the girl child by sending her to school:
Help an orphan
Without parents or guardians, children suffer from dangers and are vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, homelessness, starvation and death. A child needs protection and guidance from adults to navigate this world and grow to adulthood. But without this, children become orphans and lose all opportunities for a happy childhood and promising future. The No Child Orphaned campaign is a safe home for orphans that provides shelter, regular and nutritious food, medical care, education and the love and affection that all children deserve. This Valentine’s Day, be charitable to orphans by giving them safe and joyful childhoods:
Care for an animal
Street animals such as dogs and cats are victims of some of the most cruel treatment that exists. Despite laws to protect them stray animals are beaten, kicked, doused with acid and burned with boiling water or hot oil. With no one to care for them, they suffer from or succumb to their wounds. The Stop Animal Cruelty campaign rescues suffering stray animals from the streets and gives them safe shelter, medical care for their wounds, regular meals and all the pats and belly rubs an animal needs. This Valentine’s Day, be charitable to stray animals by protecting them from the dangers of the streets:
Feed the destitute
Food is the basic need that all human beings need to live. But there are millions of people across India who do not have a single meal to eat. Because of this, disadvantaged children and adults suffer from malnutrition, bone loss, stunted growth, organ failure and other conditions that lead to an early death. The Feed The Hungry campaign serves fresh and nutritious midday meals to people in need of food. In addition, the campaign also gives food rations to needy families to help them have enough food to feed their children. This Valentine’s Day, be charitable to the destitute by giving them fresh meals and food rations:
