HAPPINESS comes in different shapes and sizes. For some, it could be a fresh meal. For others, it could be learning a new language which helps them do better in school or land that new job. In our lives, we come across hundreds of people who could benefit in some form or the other by our skills and abilities. International Day of Happiness is celebrated around the world each March 20th and turns our attention to that most important human emotion – happiness.
Here are 5 ways to spread happiness to others:
Cook fresh meals for others
Hunger and starvation are some of the most urgent issues facing people across India. Helping people meet their basic needs, such as having meals to eat every day, can make the difference between hope and despair. Cooking a fresh and nutritious meal for a person we know or come across who is in need can help them get through the day and find the physical and mental strength to build their lives and have hope for the future.
Give away unused clothes
Over the years, we tend to accumulate clothes that we might have grown out of or that we might not want to wear anymore. But these clothes are still in good condition but are just not being worn. These clothes make a great donation to people in need of new clothes but cannot afford them. Before you donate your used clothes, make sure they are washed, ironed and in good condition without any tears in them so that the new wearers can feel good about their new clothes.
Teach English or other skills
Each of us have skills that we have honed over the decades from school to university to our careers. For some, these include language skills and for others it could be mathematics proficiency or computer literacy among others. Spending time teaching others to develop these skills will help them in their academic or professional lives and boost their chances at succeeding in tasks such as passing a test or getting a job and improving their futures.
Become an NGO volunteer
There are NGOs across India that depend on the compassion of volunteers who are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of the underprivileged. For volunteers, spending the weekend or a few hours each morning or evening helping charitable organizations in their areas of specialization such as finance, marketing, social media or running errands makes their lives worthwhile and meaningful while transforming the lives of the less fortunate.
Make a financial contribution to an NGO
NGOs operate on the financial donations of individuals who have a heart for the mission and vision of the organization they have chosen to support. For donors, making a financial contribution each month connects them to the organization in a close and personal manner. With each person helped by the NGO, the donor is also a part of that help that is provided and this makes a massive impact in the lives of the organization, the person in need and the charitable donor.

This International Day of Happiness, think about the things that you can do for others to make their lives better and improve their lives and futures. This could be sharing your time with people to making a charitable donation to organizations that are specialized in finding groups of people in need of help and giving them access to what is needed to live better lives. This International Day of Happiness, spread cheer and improve a life!
