On the day we visited, we met Mr. Madhu who had come in to get his artificial limb repaired. Due to the language barrier, we could not speak to him directly and communicated with the help of Mr. Jayaraman (who is Anga Karunya Kendra’s administrator). Originally from Madanapalli, in the heart of rural Karnataka, Madhu is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s in Agriculture from Nagpur. He had lost his right leg in a bike accident a few years ago. It was through a family friend that he learnt about Anga Karunya Kendra and is extremely thankful for the same; because he realizes he would have been rendered immobile otherwise. His mobility now allows him to have big dreams – like working for an agricultural exchange firm, getting married and setting up a family one day.
We also got a chance to meet Rajesh. 35-year-old Rajesh lost the use of his legs due to a bout of Polio when he was just three and a half years old. From where Rajesh comes, awareness about the disease was low in 1978; due to which he did not get his two live-saving drops. The wheelchair Rajesh currently uses, has been given to him by Anga Karunya Kendra. It is thanks to this that he is able to move about freely, enabling him to give Maths and English tuitions to children. He is also qualified in computers and teaches computers to kids.
