FATHER’S Day is celebrated around the world on the third Sunday in June and is a day that is set aside to honor and express affection and gratitude to fathers, grandfathers and all people who are father figures to people. This includes a stepfather, a teacher or a founder of an NGO for children who stand in the gap and take care of those who do not have fathers in their lives. First observed in the early 1900s, Father’s Day is now celebrated worldwide by sending cards, flowers, presents and treating fathers to activities that they enjoy, such as watching a movie, going to a sporting event or a quiet dinner at home.
The first Father’s Day
Father’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day message and thought about her father, who raised her and her 5 brothers and sisters after their mother died. Local support grew for the idea of having a separate day to celebrate fathers and three US presidents gave their support to the idea of Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June, which was officially signed into legislation in 1972 by President Richard Nixon.

Thangaperumal Ponpandi of Children of India Foundation
Thangaperumal Ponpandi is dedicated to rescuing girls from forced prostitution under the guise of the banned Devadasi practice. When Thangaperumal first heard about the ancient and illegal Devadasi system being misused to sexually exploit girls, he decided to investigate. He saw rows upon rows of beds lined up in a room.
In that room, men would sexually abuse the minor girls. Children of India Foundation started rescuing girls and counseling families to make sure the abuse permanently ends. Bipin Dhane of Ayang Trust
Bipin Dhane graduated from IIT Kharagpur and was all set to move to Singapore for a new job. But when he made a visit to Majuli Island, he was shocked that there were no schools for the children. Moreover, Majuli Island was sinking, meaning that the lack of opportunities would pass on to the next generation.
Bipin started The Hummingbird School in 2017 which now educates more than 280 students, many of whom are orphaned. Bipin’s NGO for children called Ayang Trust gives the children education, meals, activities, a happy childhood and the chance to build dignified and promising futures. Retired Colonel Mickie Uberoi is a celebrated Indian Army veteran who runs a safe and loving home for orphaned and abandoned children through his NGO for children Sant Ishwar Foundation. Colonel Uberoi’s home, named Ghar, shelters children who are found on the roadside and exposed to the dangers of the streets.
