Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad: an education NGO in Delhi for blind girls

IT was a horrific accident that caused complete blindness in a teenaged boy named Ramesh. In a sudden moment, Ramesh lost the use of his eyes and his life was sent into a tailspin. In shock and chaos, this thirteen year old was now forced to navigate the rest of his life without the use of his eyes – something he never expected. But as Ramesh became older, he realized that he had the will to achieve great things despite his disabilities. He focused on his education, graduated with advanced degrees, discovered that it was education that empowered him and this led him to start an education NGO in Delhi for blind girls.

Ramesh had resolve but he also had compassion for blind children who needed a helping hand; a helping hand that he knew he could provide. Ramesh founded Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad, an education NGO in Delhi that supports children with visual disabilities through education, safe shelter, nutritious food and personal care to help them achieve their dreams and not allow their blindness to hold them back from living full and complete lives. Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad became a safe haven that would go on to transform the lives of countless children.

Ramesh and his heart for blind children

Ramesh Prasad Singh is from a small city in Bihar and often witnessed the suffering of people from poor backgrounds. His accident propelled him to reach out and help these individuals and families. In addition to the struggles of searching for food, shelter, medicines and basic needs that are difficult when a person is poor, there is also the added responsibilities of caring for a child who is blind. Families from underprivileged backgrounds cannot afford these basic needs, therefore have no chance to provide specialized education and care for a special needs child.

Ramesh founded Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad in 1996 and right from the start, this education NGO in Delhi began providing all-rounded care for disadvantaged children with visual disabilities. Ramesh realized that it was indeed education that is the most powerful method to transform a life from lacking possibilities to being able to reach one’s goals and dreams. Ramesh Prasad Singh is also an educator by profession and teaches in a government school in Delhi so he understood firsthand that what blind children need is the foundation to improve their lives.

How the education NGO in Delhi cares for blind children

Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad is an education NGO in Delhi that focuses on education as the means to equip and empower children with visual disabilities. But it also tends to other needs in the children’s lives. It is important to have a safe environment conducive to learning but the families of the children are too poor to afford their care. Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad provides residential facilities that create a positive environment for the children to be motivated, believe in their abilities and go on to succeed in their higher education.

The education NGO in Delhi gives children with blindness a residential school to pursue their education and not be denied opportunities to succeed in life due to their visual disabilities. The organization teaches academics, Braille, life skills, mobility instruction and life experiences pertaining to their age group. This equips the children with the academic and practical skills to graduate from school and specialize in further education. Ramesh considers this important because it is a solid education that will enable people to secure employment in the future.

Blind girls from poor backgrounds

Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad helps and educates 40 children with visual disabilities at its residential school. These children being educated by the education NGO in Delhi are all girls who are between the ages of 18 to 27. Most of the girls are from the eastern regions of India and live in small towns that are not equipped with the knowledge or resources to help them. Each child has her own stories to tell and dreams for their future but one thing all the girls have in common is an underprivileged background of desperate need and suffering

Having a poor background cuts off access to the environment, resources and even awareness to live and thrive as a child with visual disabilities. The education NGO in Delhi focuses on bridging this gap and giving the girls access to all that is needed to overcome their disabilities and the stigma that so often suppresses them and keeps them down. Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad also works with the families to help them understand that blindness is not a “curse” and that their daughters can live as accomplished individuals – if given opportunities.

Bhartiye Netraheen Kalyan Parishad is an education NGO in Delhi that understands the resources available in the area and works with the children to empower them toward a particular objective – that objective being to help the children be trained to get safe and decent employment in the future that allows them to live dignified and independent lives. Ramesh understands the importance of being self-sufficient and thus provides the platform for these girls to be trained in vocational skills and receive job-oriented training to give them confidence in their abilities.
