WOMEN’S History Month is a time to both celebrate women’s contributions to human civilization and examine the issues that women face in different areas of life. The month of March is when schools, colleges, universities and workplaces around the world focus on issues related to women and hold debates, creative activities and discussion groups to deliberate on issues that pertain to women such as women’s rights, women’s safety, discrimination against women, violence against women and equal opportunities for women.
Women’s History Month is celebrated all month long during March when International Women’s Day is also celebrated. Recognizing that women make up half the population of the world, individuals and organizations worldwide prioritize turning their attention to the issues impacting women and coming up with solutions to mitigate or eradicate those pressing issues. Issues such as water scarcity, natural disasters or deforestation have more of a devastating impact on women than what first meets the eye and the effort to understand this has yielded useful results.
Why International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th
March 8th is also the date chosen to celebrate International Women’s Day which has been celebrated around the world since 1922 when that particular date was decided upon to honor the contributions made by women who went on strike in Tsarist Russia to protest against poor living conditions in 1917 – a particularly poignant year in world history. March 8th as International Women’s Day was officially adopted by the United Nations in 1977 and by governments and organizations around the world since then to raise awareness on the issues impacting women.
The effort to address issues impacting women and devising solutions is one that both men and women must tackle together. Both men and women must acknowledge that women face injustices, that these injustices hinder human progress and all people must come together to eradicate these issues. It is only then that the social problems affecting human societies will cease to affect men, women and children and will improve the standard and quality of life for all people. Women’s History Month is an opportune time to take appropriate steps to accomplish this.
NGOs empowering women
In India and across the world, NGOs lead the way when it comes to identifying problems in society, devising sustainable solutions and monitoring the impact to ensure that the interventions are making a long term difference in the lives of individuals and entire communities. NGOs are specialized in specific areas of intervention such as education for the girl child or finding freshwater sources for communities in remote areas and through these interventions, these charitable organizations transform the lives of girls and women.
NGOs are well connected to local communities and have their finger on the pulse of what affects them for good and bad. This information is obtained through years of interactions and observing firsthand what their experiences are. Using this information, NGOs gather their resources and come up with practical and realistic solutions and then begin the arduous task of securing funding to implement these solutions in close partnership with the local authorities. It is crucial for NGOs to measure the effect of their solutions and determine its success.
The impact made by NGOs
NGOs in India that empower women make a difference in the lives of people who have long suffered from issues such as the lack of education, lack of access to safe and decent employment or the inability to pursue justice for crimes committed against them. Each NGO exists in a landscape that is defined by local practices and requires a tailor-made solution to the problems that exist for women in those communities. For example, traditional practices have an impact on women who are exploited under the guise of such practices and are harder to root out.
Furthermore, NGOs that are committed to ending crimes or injustices against women are located in the areas where these women live and oftentimes have a direct and personal relationship with them. The NGOs are therefore well suited to monitoring the success or challenges of their programs and changing course if needed to ensure that the lives of all people concerned are improving for the better. Furthermore, as non profits, NGOs’ priorities are in the well being of the men, women and children it is working with rather than personal gain.
