“Teachers should be the best minds in the country:
—Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
EVERY year, on the 5th of September, India comes together to celebrate Teachers’ Day—a heartfelt tribute to one of its greatest educators and statesmen, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. This day is not just about honouring teachers; it is a recognition of the intellectual and moral foundations they lay for society. The celebration coincides with the birthday of Dr. Radhakrishnan. He was a scholar, philosopher, and leader who believed that teaching was the highest form of service.
Dr. Radhakrishnan’s life was a testament to this belief. He served as the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and later as the second President (1962–1967). But he remained, at heart, a teacher. His journey began in the classrooms of Madras Presidency College, where he inspired students with his profound knowledge of philosophy. His humility and dedication were beyond question. For instance in 1962, he said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.” Since then, the day has been dedicated to honouring the contributions of teachers across the nation.
Here are some lesser-known facts about this extraordinary personality on Teachers’ Day:
- An academic luminary: Dr. Radhakrishnan was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Mysore in 1918. Later, he held the prestigious King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at Calcutta University. At Presidency College, he lectured on psychology and European philosophy. He covered topics like logic, epistemology, and ethical theory with remarkable clarity.
- A prolific writer: His first book explored the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore. He went on to publish influential works such as ‘The Religion We Need,’ ‘The Heart of Hindustan,’ and ‘The Future Civilisation.’ His writings bridged Eastern and Western thought, making Indian philosophy accessible to the world.
- International recognition: His first article, “The Ethics of the Bhagavadgita and Kant,” was published in The International Journal of Ethics in 1911. This work introduced his intellectual prowess to a global audience. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for five consecutive years. It was a rare honour—and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

- Diplomat and Statesman: Beyond academia, Dr. Radhakrishnan served as Indian Ambassador to the Soviet Union, appointed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. His diplomatic skills and intellectual integrity helped strengthen India’s ties with the world during a critical period.
- A Legacy of excellence: Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that education was the means to awaken individuality, creativity, and critical thinking. He championed the idea that teachers must be the “best minds.” They must be people who not only impart knowledge but also shape character and inspire values.
Radhakrishnan as a pathbreaking diplomat
During his tenure as India’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1949-1952), Dr. Radhakrishnan was a remarkably effective diplomat. Despite the complexities of the early Cold War. His success was rooted not in political maneuvering, but in his immense intellectual stature and personal integrity.
- Intellectual respect: In a regime deeply suspicious of Western-aligned figures, Radhakrishnan, a world-renowned philosopher, commanded immediate respect. He could engage with Soviet leaders, including Stalin, on their own ideological terms. He famously discussed Marxist and Leninist philosophy with them, not as a critic but as a fellow thinker, which created a unique bridge for dialogue.

- Building trust with Stalin: He is often credited with helping to soften Joseph Stalin’s distrust of India. His sincere and philosophical approach made a notable impression on the Soviet leader during their meetings. This personal rapport was crucial in ensuring Soviet support for India during critical times, including its early stance on Kashmir and its non-aligned position.
- Strengthening Indo-Soviet relations: His tenure laid the foundational trust and goodwill that blossomed into the strong strategic and economic partnership between India and the USSR. He successfully navigated a period when India was establishing its independent foreign policy, assuring the Soviets of India’s sovereign intentions.
In essence, Radhakrishnan was a diplomat who won influence through the power of ideas and mutual respect. He proved that intellect and character could be as powerful as political strategy in international relations.

In fact, on Teacher’s Day, the government of India honours best teachers every year like it has done in 2025 too in a ceremony in Delhi.
In the spirit of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s belief that “teachers should be the best minds in the country,” individuals like Bipin Dhane are bringing hope to vulnerable communities.
