Salim’s journey

When I heard Salim’s story, I knew I had to share it with you. One of my colleagues met four-year-old Salim during her visit to a nonprofit school in Kharagpur. He sat in a corner, dressed in worn-out shorts and a shirt with holes in it. She soon discovered that even though he was getting his education, he didn’t own a school bag and walked barefoot to school every day.

Salim is from a poor village in West Bengal. His parents worked as farm laborers and they struggled to get by. But the family loved each other and found strength in their bond to keep going.

One night, Salim’s baby brother was attacked by a tiger and killed in front of his family’s eyes. After the tragedy, the family could not bear to stay in the village, so they moved to Kharagpur to restart their lives.

Salim still misses his brother and his parents can barely afford the city. But coming to school, seeing his friends, gaining education, and playing has given him a sense of belonging and something to look forward to.

Families like Salim’s are left with a loss that no one can heal. But you could help a child like him move forward with a safe space to grow and thrive. There are many NGOs who focus on giving the children of our country a bright future and you too can join the cause.
