ANIMAL abuse occurs all around us. From the streets to people’s homes, from factory farms to hill stations – animals are abused, overworked and treated no better than objects. But animals are sentient creatures and a valuable part of our ecosystem. Each animal group such as mammals, reptiles, birds and others has their own unique relationship with nature and with each other. Just like humans, males and females of each species reproduce, feed and have a strong sense of self-preservation.

But in places all around us, needless animal abuse takes place. Street animals such as dogs or cats are beaten or deliberately hit with vehicles, factory farm animals such as pigs and hens are crammed into small cages and working animals such as horses and camels are overworked to the point of exhaustion or death. We see this unfolding before us and on social media and are inundated with a sense of helplessness. But the mission of animal NGOs in India is to stop this abuse from happening and rescue and rehabilitate these animals.

Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty addresses the issue of animal abuse and works with a network of animal NGOs in India to rescue animals from harm and give them nutritious food, medical treatment, safe shelter and the chance to live without fear in areas similar to their natural habitat. Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty works with animal NGOs in India that help different animals including dogs, cats, pigs, buffaloes, camels, horses and hens, to name a few. In addition to the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals, Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty also conducts awareness sessions with the general public on how to spot and stop animal abuse and find ways humans and animals can peacefully coexist.

Why do people abuse animals?

Harming animals occurs due to multiple reasons. In most cases, the lack of concern for the well being of an animal or even the failure to consider the animal as a living being leads people to harm an animal. This animal abuse includes shouting at a pet animal, beating or punching or kicking them, starving them, depriving them of medical care, overworking them and even subjecting animals to sexual torture

Furthermore, the lack of strict laws or law enforcement is another reason people abuse animals. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 provides a clear definition of animal abuse, the institutions tasked with upholding the act, the laws surrounding animal welfare and the punishment, including fines or imprisonment, for breaking the laws. But across India, law-breakers go unpunished and while there is temporary public outrage on instances of animal rights violations, there is no real permanent deterrent to stopping and preventing future crimes against animals.

How Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty helps curb animal abuse

Mission Stop Animal Cruelty and its partner animal NGOs in India are stepping forward to meet the immediate and long-term needs of abused animals. The organizations rescue animals such as injured stray dogs and cats from the streets and overworked horses and camels on the brink of death and administer emergency medical treatment to ensure their wounds do not maim them for life or lead to death. The NGOs also save pigs and hens from factory farms where they are beaten, dragged across the floor and crammed into tiny cages before parts of their bodies are forcefully removed. The animal NGOs also rescue boars and buffaloes that have their jaws chained shut while being transported to factory farms.

Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty and its network of animal NGOs in India have:

  • rescued and sheltered 20,000 animals
  • sterilized 10,000 animals
  • and trained 5,000 veterinarians in animal nutrition

Beyond immediate care, these animal NGOs in India also run sterilization or ABC (animal birth control) drives to sterilize and vaccinate animals. This ensures stray animals do not overpopulate, which can lead to human-animal conflict. Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty also undertakes an important aspect of ending animal abuse and that is raising awareness among local communities on ways they can stop animals from being harmed. Through informative and educational sessions, people are taught about the laws, animal rights, their rights pertaining to animals and little ways they can make sure they do not inadvertently contribute to animal abuse – such as using animals for entertainment at the circus, the beach or hill stations.

Once these abused and overworked animals are rescued and make a full recovery, they cannot go back to the same places; they need a safe and comfortable area to call home for the rest of their lives. Mission: Stop Animal Cruelty and its partner NGOs have safe sanctuaries for rescued dogs, cats, horses, camels, pigs, hens, buffaloes and others, where they are fed nutritious and delicious food, have consistent care and enough space to walk, run, play and live as they would in their natural environment. In the sanctuaries, the animals receive affection and love from the NGO caretakers. Over time, each animal undergoes a transformation. The animals are no longer terrified and emaciated but are comfortable and exhibit signs of happiness and trust
