International Day of Persons with Disabilities: 5 NGOs supporting the disabled

INTERNATIONAL Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3rd, is a day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities worldwide. In India, International Day of Persons with Disabilities holds significant importance as the country grapples with the challenges faced by a substantial population with various disabilities. The observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities in India involves a range of activities, including awareness campaigns, seminars and events highlighting the achievements and struggles of persons with disabilities. The goal is to foster an inclusive society that recognizes the rights of every individual, irrespective of their abilities.

NGOs play a pivotal role in India, working tirelessly to improve the lives of people with disabilities. These NGOs focus on education, healthcare, employment and social integration. They organize events on International Day of Persons with Disabilities to shed light on the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities. Many NGOs push for policy changes and actively participate in the implementation of laws that protect the rights of persons with disabilities. They also collaborate with government bodies, educational institutions and businesses to create an environment that caters to the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities.

This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, here are 5 NGOs you can support:

Satya Special School

Chitra Shah, upon discovering a young girl with Down’s Syndrome tied to a chair and living in deplorable conditions, was moved to take action. For two decades, Satya Special School has been a pillar of support for children with disabilities in 10 centers across rural and urban Puducherry. The school’s mission is rooted in empowering these children, providing them with therapies, education and vocational skills training to lead lives filled with dignity and respect. Many of these children, often abandoned due to their disabilities, find a haven at Satya Special School, where they are nurtured and encouraged to stand independently, breaking free from the shackles of societal stigma.

The school’s holistic approach includes various therapies such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy and art therapy, addressing both physical and educational needs. International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an opportune time to support NGOs like Satya Special School which prepares disabled children for integration into mainstream schools and jobs. Satya Special School goes beyond academics, offering facilities like a sensory walkway, an inclusive disabled-friendly play park, and a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to enhance the overall well-being of the children, fostering an environment where every child can thrive regardless of their abilities.
