India lags behind the rest of the world when it comes to the prospects and opportunities available for people with disabilities. People with disabilities comprise a large number of our population, whi without having nearly the same benefits. In fact the treatment of such people is nothing short of appalling. Promises are made by the government, quotas are established in the job market, but for various reasons these dreams, along with the dreams of the disabled, fail to reach fruition.
Helpers of the Handicapped strives to rehabilitate people living with disabilities. They aim to provide them with a better, more dignified life and an opportunity to find their footing in society. It is a long and arduous process, often beginning at the grass roots level and requiring regular and meaningful follow up. The disabled demand a voice. They demand just and equal treatment. They want to be economically, socially and emotionally at ease – these are fundamental rights that nevertheless remain distant dreams for most.
Helpers of the Handicapped was founded in 1984 by two dynamic women: Naseema Hurzuk and Rajani Karkare, both physically disabled, along with a handful of similarly single minded individuals.
Since its establishment the organization has helped rehabilitate thousands of people through projects such as “provide rehabilitation to disabled students” and “Sponsor education for disabled rural children,” both of which are currently listed on LetzChange and available for donations. Through such projects, Helpers of the Handicapped helps people with disabilities realise their dreams of a better life, a secure life. They have also, through their valiant efforts, helped create necessary infrastructure like hotels and rehab centres that will only further help disabled people.
Here at LetzChange we are delighted to be working with such an important organization, and are happy to give Helpers of the Handicapped a helping hand themselves by matching all donations made to this Indian NGO on LetzChange.org.
