Manzil Mystics

Striking a harmonious chord: Anurag Hoon’s journey to music education and social change

THE power of music education to fundamentally transform lives has been researched world over. The findings point towards significant improvement in physical, mental and emotional well being. However despite the benefits of music for children and the strong cultural and traditional affinity towards music in India, formal music education remains inaccessible to a vast majority of school goers. A Delhi based musician and social worker resolved to change this.

Anurag Hoon is determined to make a lasting impact on the lives of underserved children through music. Born into a low-income family with limited access to education, Anurag’s path took an unexpected turn, ultimately leading him to co-found the Manzil Mystics nonprofit—an organisation dedicated to bringing the gift of music education to the lives of countless young learners.

From adversity to aspiration

Anurag’s early life was marked by constraints familiar to many from low-income backgrounds. His family’s focus on education was primarily geared towards securing a job, leaving little room for nurturing dreams or exploring new opportunities. However, a determined spirit and a love for music propelled Anurag to defy these limitations. Despite challenges and pressure from family, he embarked on a quest to learn music, starting a journey that would forever shape his destiny.

The turning point

Anurag’s life took a pivotal turn when he learned about the Manzil Welfare Society—a Delhi-based non-profit organisation—where he was introduced to the transformative power of music and self-expression. Under the guidance of mentors like Ravi Gulati and others, Anurag not only honed his musical talents but also discovered his potential as an individual. This experience led him to co-found the Manzil Mystics, a musical initiative aimed at bridging the gap in music education for low-income and government school students.

Inspiration and challenges

The journey of Manzil Mystics was not without its challenges. Initially conceived as a part-time endeavour, the initiative soon demanded Anurag’s full attention. Together with his band members, he realised the urgent need to provide consistent and comprehensive music education to underserved communities. The realisation that over 80% of Delhi’s 4.4 million students lacked access to music education ignited a passion to create meaningful change.

Anurag and his team faced hurdles ranging from limited funds and operational challenges to the broader societal perception of music as mere entertainment. Yet, their dedication to the cause and the unwavering support of mentors propelled them forward, reinforcing the belief that music is not only a source of joy but a powerful tool for education and social development.

Tales of triumph

Amid the challenges, Manzil Mystics has achieved remarkable success stories. One such narrative is that of the “Street to Stage” journey. A group of students, collectively known as Mantash, emerged from the program and transformed into a professional music band. Beyond the realm of music, Mantash musicians became leaders within the organisation, contributing to the learning of thousands of students and carrying the torch of social change.

Overcoming personal and organisational challenges

Anurag’s journey also highlights the importance of mentorship and support. Having grown up in an environment lacking trust and space for dreams, he found mentors who believed in his potential and helped him navigate personal and professional challenges. The establishment of Manzil Mystics brought its own set of obstacles, from financial constraints to organisational management. Yet, through perseverance, a growth mindset, and the support of the development sector, Anurag and his team overcame these hurdles and propelled their initiative to greater heights.

A vision for a harmonious future

Looking ahead, Anurag’s vision for Manzil Mystics is ambitious and inspiring. He envisions a future where every child, regardless of socioeconomic background, has access to the transformative power of music education. Through a unique blend of curriculum, mentorship, and community engagement, Anurag aims to empower a new generation of musicians and educators who advocate for the importance of music in education and holistic development.

How you can join the melody of change

For those inspired by Anurag’s journey and the mission of Manzil Mystics, there are numerous ways to offer support. Whether through volunteering time, sharing the organisation’s music, providing network connections, or contributing funds, every gesture can play a role in nurturing the dreams of underprivileged children and in fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society.

In the symphony of life, Anurag Hoon and the Manzil Mystics are orchestrating a powerful movement, using the universal language of music to break barriers, inspire dreams, and create a brighter future for generations to come.
