ORPHANS are vulnerable at birth. Without parents or guardians to protect them, orphans are left alone and exposed to the dangers of this world, which often includes criminals who search for unprotected children to exploit into child labor, drug peddling or sex trafficking. For some children, this shapes the rest of their lives, which descends into a life of miserable crime. But for others who are rescued, they have a chance to start again and receive all that a child deserves. The Hope House is an NGO orphanage that rescues and cares for orphans who have an additional hurdle to cross – disabilities.
Helping orphans with special needs is the mission of The Hope House, an NGO orphanage in Vellore, Tamil Nadu that cares for these children by providing them with shelter, nutrition, education, care and the platform to build strong and secure futures which includes teaching the children about their rights. The Hope House currently takes care of 14 orphaned children who have special needs and is passionate about helping them overcome the pain of orphanhood. The organization provides a place that the children consider their home and aims to make it a place where the children can feel safe and comfortable. Living without parents is difficult for children. But The Hope House believes that it can nurture the children and help them look to the future with hope. The organization is currently running a fundraiser to purchase baby formula and diapers for the youngest children at the home.
The children at The Hope House
The Hope House accepts children into its home through a referral process that people can use when they know about a child who has been orphaned or abandoned. The Hope House aims to be a responsible NGO orphanage so once it receives information about an orphaned child in desperate need of rescue, the organization’s social worker conducts a thorough need assessment of the child and prepares a report that The Hope House then uses to decide on the best course of action for the child. If the child has no family members or others who can care for them, The Hope House takes the child into the home, following the procedures of the local authorities and the local police.
The campaign to purchase baby formula and diapers
The Hope House cares for orphaned children who are as young as just twelve days old and need special care to ensure that their small bodies receive the crucial care needed to keep them healthy and active. The NGO orphanage prioritizes the health of the children and is currently raising funds to purchase Lactogen Pro 1 Powder and Pampers diapers for newborn orphans at the home. These two essential products for newborns will ensure their health and comfort at their crucial developmental stages and help them grow into healthy and active children, able to enjoy their childhoods as they deserve.
The Hope House’s facilities for the children
The NGO orphanage takes care of 14 children in the newborn to eighteen age group and are sheltered in a safe and secure environment at The Hope House. Within the walls of The Hope House, the children have vibrant and cheerful lives. Many of the children have never had bedrooms or beds of their own but at The Hope House, each child has their own bed with a comfortable mattress. The dining hall has comfortable dining tables and chairs where children enjoy regular and healthy meals, for the first time in their lives.
The NGO orphanage has built a library that is equipped with newspapers, books and magazines so the children have access to knowledge and information crucial for their mental development. For their entertainment, there are televisions, cable TV, a music system and Wi-Fi so the children can watch cartoons and other delightful entertainment catered to the young minds of children. The children are enrolled in schools where they receive an education and life skills training that prepares them for a successful career in the future as young adults.
Rights-based education to empower children
The children at The Hope House have come from difficult backgrounds. Being orphaned or abandoned is hard for children to overcome and many are coerced or exploited by those who seek to exploit their vulnerability. The Hope House prioritizes teaching the children about their basic rights which includes: survival, development, participation and protection. The NGO orphanage follows the guidelines of the law when imparting this education to ensure that children are aware of their Constitutional and legal rights as they continue to grow and succeed in the world around them. The aim of this rights-based education is to empower the children so that they are not exploited or taken advantage of as a result of the absence of biological parents.
The Hope House’s founders
The Hope House was founded by a couple who adopted two girls and lived in the United States. Ruby Nakka and his wife worked in the area of healthcare when they adopted their two daughters. This experience opened their eyes to the incredible transformation that an orphaned child goes through once they receive love, care and guidance from parents or parental figures. Ruby and his wife thought about all the children back home in India without homes and it was a thought that wouldn’t leave their minds. So the couple made the decision to move back to India in 2006 to take care of as many orphaned children as possible and encourage couples to adopt children. Joining hands with other NRI friends who had moved back to India, Ruby Nakka founded The Hope House as an NGO orphanage for children in desperate need of a safe and loving home.
