The plight of egg-laying hens in battery cages and their cries for help have gone unseen and unheard for decades, even as traditional Indian cage-free farming got increasingly ignored and fell by the wayside. “An estimated 40 crore chickens today are in battery cages. The time to free the battery-caged hens is now,” says Gauri Maulekhi of People for Animals-Uttarakhand (PFA-Uttarakhand).
The India Animal Foundation (IAF) is trying to do just that by helping Gauri and other organisations working to set up cage-free farms to save millions of hens from a life of endless suffering. Help build humane, cage-free poultry farms. Donate now.

“The life of a hen confined within a tiny battery cage is nothing short of hell. These innocent creatures are denied the most basic rights – the freedom to stretch their wings or even access fresh air or sunlight. From the moment they hatch, their lives are marred by suffering. Their beaks are cruelly mutilated, causing excruciating pain, all in the name of profit. Can we, as compassionate individuals, turn a blind eye to such cruelty? Can we allow this heart-wrenching pain to continue?” questions Gauri.
What are Battery Cages
In factory-style poultry farms, hens are kept in small wire cages known as battery cages in which multiple birds are packed like sardines leaving them no space to move or walk. Up to a dozen hens can be cramped into these cages, with each bird having less space than an A4 size sheet of paper.
“These intelligent and sentient beings are trapped in a perpetual state of anguish. Each day, they are subjected to unnatural living conditions, treated as mere egg-producing machines with no regard for their suffering. They endure physical and emotional torment, living in constant fear and distress. The impact of battery cages on these innocent hens is profound, but we can ease their pain”, says Gauri.

A solution to end suffering
“In complete contrast to battery farming, traditional Indian poultry farming technique has cage-free farms where hens are allowed to roam freely. The eggs produced through cage-free farming are known to be healthier and cage-free farming can even be profitable for farmers” the NGO leader informs. However, farmers need support to take up cage-free farming. They require proper training and help in setting up poultry farms that give hens a chance to spread their wings freely.
With your support, Gauri’s PFA-Uttarakhand and NGOs can enable hundreds of farmers to take up cage-free farming and check abusive and stifling farming techniques.
