“I was sold as a 15-year-old to marry an elderly man. And it was my sister who did it. I was sent from my home in Bihar to Punjab. I faced unimaginable hardships but the most distressing part of my ordeal was that it was my own family who did this to me. Had I not come to Kshamata, I am not sure what state I would have been in,” says Pooja (name changed), a survivor of human trafficking. She was rescued by Bharathy Tahiliani, the founder of Kshamata. 

Our NGO partner Kshamata has been a saviour for over 1,000 women caught in human trafficking and forced into sex work. The NGO has not only provided victims of violence and trafficking with safe shelter, but most importantly, livelihood opportunities which have enabled young girls and women to live their lives with their heads held high.

Healing wounds of survivors

“When young girls or women come out from forced sex work, where they have faced extreme exploitation, they often suffer serious mental and physical health complications,” says the NGO founder. To help these women rebuild their lives Kshamata takes them under its care and provides them with the support they need to move forward in life.

According to Bharathy, “The challenge is that women who are coming from exploitation, their skill level is low, their literacy level is low. We start by providing them with safety and counselling. And then we begin to help them rebuild their lives.”

“Sometimes I feel that when I have received education and so many other opportunities in life, why should any other woman be deprived of it? I feel that If I can use my life to bring light and joy into the lives of these women, then, why not?” Bharathy says.
