Story

Many of the children lose out on a bright future because they belong to financially deprived families or to communities which are socially outcasted. At Shanti Bhavan, we are trying to give them a secure learning environment where they can reach their true potential.

Shanti Bhavan is a caring home and school, exclusively for children born into India’s lowest social and economic classes. The project offers free, high-quality education for its students, both at its residential school and, subsequently, at top-tier colleges. Shanti Bhavan provides each child with complete educational, medical and residential care. In total, this is 17 to 19 years of intense intervention per child – from age 4 to 23 – to break the cycle of poverty in a single generation.

Shanti Bhavan represents a radical change from the current, short-term basic literacy model of most non-profit educational institutions. Historically, the opportunities at Shanti Bhavan are characterized in terms of long-term access to high-quality education following the rigorous ICSE and ISC curriculum, with an emphasis on the holistic personal development of children. Such a holistic approach seeks to provide children with an education at pace with the rapidly evolving needs of the workplace that simultaneously gives them the skills to succeed both professionally and personally. Shanti Bhavan is driven by the belief that all children, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, have the capacity to excel in academics and attain great professional careers if endowed with the opportunity to succeed from an early age.

We admit a pre-school class of 24 children at the age of three to four. Shanti Bhavan currently serves 305 children and cares for their comprehensive needs.

There are many charity schools in India, but their mission is often confined to giving basic education to children for a brief period of their lives.

Shanti Bhavan goes beyond the basics. Our vision is unique, innovative and life-changing in its scope, quality and understanding. Our students live with a mission to transform their communities. Their education is of the highest calibre, and we provide guidance throughout their lives. They learn to be global citizens and leaders who change the world with integrity, compassion and focus.

We have broken societal prejudice against our children, which has historically denied them access to excellence. Our students are the vehicle for change in their communities. We see family members now sending their children to school in unprecedented numbers because they have seen what it can bring. This is a revolution.
