3 ways to support the planet this Earth Day!

ENVIRONMENTAL concerns are becoming more alarming and this Earth Day focuses on the change needed in our approaches as our evolving habits and radical changes in industrial practices continue to impact the world around us. Our increased use of smartphones and the evolution of Artificial Intelligence have real world consequences with regard to the mining of precious metals and minerals and the electronic waste we generate that impact the air we breathe, the water we drink and the amount of toxic garbage accumulating in landfills around the world.

Earth Day is observed worldwide on April 22nd and gives individuals, organizations and governments a platform to examine the issues impacting our planet and come up with solutions to these problems in a realistic and sustainable manner. Give is passionate about mitigating the disastrous effects of human behavior on the planet and has devised three missions that work with a network of NGOs in dealing with a specific area of concern. This Earth Day, pledge your support each month to either of these missions and help heal the planet!

Here are three ways YOu can help the planet this Earth Day:

Plant trees to reverse air pollution

Trees are an important part of life on Earth. Trees release the clean oxygen that we humans depend on to stay alive and absorb harmful pollutants in the air that are dangerous to our bodies. But the very nature of trees also absorb excess water into its roots and this helps prevent natural disasters such as flooding and landslides. For example, during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it was found that a mangrove forest in South India slowed the oncoming tsunami waves from reaching human settlements near India’s eastern coast.

But deforestation and rapid industrialization is having a negative effect on human health and safety. Increased air pollution is a direct consequence of the loss of trees and Mission: Right To Clean Air aims to reverse this negative trend of deforestation through tree plantation. The on-ground partnering NGO teams ensure that the entire process – from tree sapling procurement, to clearing the ground to nurturing planted saplings – are carried out efficiently to ensure optimal tree growth to benefit generations of Indians. This Earth Day, help plant trees to reverse air pollution:

Clean up water bodies to combat water pollution

The loss of water has horrific consequences on human populations. Water shortages are a direct result of reduced rainfall across the planet, the loss of groundwater due to excessive use and the increased pollution of our rivers, lakes and oceans. The loss of clean water means that households across India do not have access to clean water needed to cook, drink or irrigate the crops that feed us. The consumption of contaminated water therefore affects harmful health and leads to poor health, organ damage and even death, especially in children under 5.

But there are sustainable solutions to this devastating problem. Mission: Revive India’s Water Supply works on the ground to clean, revive and restore polluted water bodies, implement rainwater harvesting techniques and repair broken tubewells to ensure that sources of clean water are once again available to communities across India. The mission’s partnering NGOs have rejuvenated more than 300 water bodies which has greatly helped local populations and farmers. This Earth Day, help clean up water bodies to combat water pollution:

Recycle and segregate waste to stop landfill accumulation

When garbage is discarded, it goes through a process that eventually sees it dumped into large landfills, where the rotting trash accumulates. This garbage is often unsegregated waste that releases toxic greenhouse gases such as methane which is harmful to the planet and its life forms and is also one of the leading causes of global warming. The gases pollute the air we breathe, choke the water that serves as our drinking sources and also contaminate the soil into which we plant our crops and that serve as breeding grounds for wildlife.

But segregating waste and recycling products such as paper and plastic can reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills. Mission: Manage India’s Waste is a grassroots effort to help segregate waste at the source – the household. By working with local communities across India, this mission will help households segregate wet and dry waste, recycle plastics and other materials, promote composting and adopt better waste management practices. This Earth Day, help recycle and segregate waste to stop harmful landfill accumulation:

Earth Day is an opportune time to make a commitment to doing what we can to reverse the effects of human behavior on the environment. When you support Mission: Right To Clean Air, Mission: Safe Water For All and Mission: Manage India’s Waste, you help solve the problem at its root and set Earth on a course that benefits all of life on the planet. This Earth Day, with a contribution made to an environmental mission each month, you can help give a better and healthier planet to future generations. Happy Earth Day!
