ELDERLY care in India is a pressing issue that requires attention and support from various sectors, including care homes for the abandoned elderly that are run by NGOs. Elderly care NGOs play a crucial role in addressing the needs of the elderly population in India. As the country’s population ages rapidly, these care homes provide a safe and supportive environment for elderly individuals who require specialised care and assistance.
Elderly care NGOs ensure that the residents receive comprehensive healthcare services. These homes are equipped with medical facilities and are staffed by trained professionals who cater to the unique healthcare needs of the elderly. One of the significant advantages of elderly care NGOs is the social support they provide. These NGOs offer a community-like setting where residents can engage in social activities, interact with their peers and develop meaningful relationships. The sense of companionship and belongingness within these care homes helps alleviate social isolation, which is a common concern among the elderly.
Elderly care NGOs in India also focus on ensuring the financial security of their residents. Elderly care homes run by NGOs serve as advocates for the rights and protection of their residents. These organisations collaborate with government agencies and policymakers to ensure that the elderly receive the necessary support, protection, and dignity they deserve. Through their advocacy efforts, these care homes contribute to policy changes and awareness campaigns aimed at improving the overall welfare of the elderly population.
Elderly care NGOs also emphasise the importance of emotional well-being. They provide counselling and mental health support to residents, recognising that emotional health is just as crucial as physical health. Elderly care NGOs in India play a vital role in providing comprehensive care, support, and advocacy for the elderly.
Here we look at 5 elderly care NGOs that are making a difference in the lives of the abandoned elderly.
Gandhibhavan
Gandhibhavan provides shelter and care for abandoned elderly and help them secure their future. The home has been a lifeline for many elderly, offering a loving home and comprehensive care. For over two decades, this NGO has taken in thousands of elderly individuals from the streets, assuming complete responsibility for their well-being. Currently, Gandhibhavan is a safe haven for over 750 abandoned elderly, providing them with solace in their twilight years. However, the past two years have been arduous for Dr. Somarajan, the driving force behind Gandhibhavan. Mounting debts have left him concerned about the organisation’s sustainability. Regrettably, without adequate funds, Gandhibhavan may be unable to continue its crucial work.
Extend a helping hand by making a donation to their fundraiser on Give to Dr. Somarajan in caring for these 750 abandoned elderly, individuals who have lost their homes and hope. Your donation can make a significant impact. In 2002, Dr. Somarajan encountered a destitute elderly lady on the streets, frail and in desperate need of care. Stirred by her plight, he rescued and provided her a loving home. This encounter propelled Dr. Somarajan to establish Gandhibhavan, initially renting a two-bedroom house to rescue abandoned elderly individuals. Since then, he has saved numerous vulnerable elderly individuals from a wretched fate. Gandhibhavan has a fundraiser with Give and you can make a donation to make a difference.
Share and Care
Hundreds of abandoned grandparents, predominantly elderly women, are in dire need of assistance which they receive through Share and Care. Abandoned by their children, these elderly people have no means to support themselves and are too old to work. Moreover, they suffer from various health problems but have no access to medicines or care. These senior citizens, belonging to tribal communities, lack access to basic necessities like food and medicine and this compromises their well-being. You can help abandoned elderly parents at Share and Care struggling with hunger and health issues. Carmel Arokiaswamy, the co-founder urgently needs your assistance to take care of around 400 abandoned elderly. Share and Care provides essential support through social welfare programs, including food, medicine, clothing, and counselling. Join us in alleviating their suffering and restoring their dignity. Shree Navchetan Andhjan Mandal
At a time when the plight of abandoned blind seniors went unnoticed, Laljibhai Prajapati emerged as a shining example of compassion for the blind and founded Shree Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, harnessing the power of crowdfunding in India to provide a haven for the visually impaired. As the founder of this remarkable organisation, Laljibhai Prajapati has dedicated his life to providing a haven and a dignified life for blind seniors abandoned by their families. Indian crowdfunding platforms have played a significant role in this endeavour, allowing the organisation to raise necessary funds and continue its selfless work. Providing a safe haven for the blind has been crucial to NGO work. Shree Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, using resources garnered from crowdfunding in India, serves as a home away from home for abandoned blind seniors. The organisation’s primary objective is to offer a comfortable and secure living space where seniors can lead a life of dignity and respect. As the home for the blind elderly is crumbling, you can help them save from a life on the streets by making a donation to the Give’s fundraiser.

Abhoy Mission
This NGO in Tripura brings together elderly people and special-needs children who have both been abandoned by their families. The Abhoy Mission Ashram cares for them with shelter, nutritious food, physiotherapy, counselling, sports and other necessities. For the neglected elderly and children with disabilities, being shunned by their families is one of the hardest things to overcome. But they have found a new family in each other and the senior citizens cherish their new “grandchildren” while the children enjoy caring for and learning from their elders. But the home they have come to call their own since 1988 is in a dilapidated condition. The walls are crumbling and the home often floods during the monsoon season. Without the Abhoy Mission Ashram, there is a high risk of homelessness and exploitation of these two vulnerable groups of people. Your support to Abhoy Mission’s fundraiser on Give can ensure that these 28 elderly people and 65 children can continue to live in their home and receive the care they so desperately need.
SENEH (Bhavada Devi Memorial Philanthropic Trust)
There are many dangers that face abandoned elderly women living on the streets. SENEH is an NGO in Guwahati that rescues neglected and homeless women and gives them a home, healthy food, medical and psychiatric care, emotional support, hobbies and more. By taking care of their needs, SENEH gives these 28 abandoned women the opportunity to live in dignity and safety. This non profit organization was started by Indian Air Force Group Captain AC Barua who served for over 30 years. But his retirement did not stop him from serving the country. While conducting relief work after the damage done by the 2007 floods in Assam, he witnessed the immense suffering of people, especially destitute women. Group Captain AC Barua immediately went into action and founded the Bhavada Devi Memorial Philanthropic Trust. But the NGO needs your support to continue providing shelter and care for these 28 women. Your charitable donation to their fundraiser on Give will make a difference in the lives of these helpless women.
