Visually impaired Laljibhai’s home for 63 homeless and blind elderly is crumbling. Help him rebuild it.

Story

“I spent my life working hard to provide my sons everything they needed but when I lost my eyesight they turned their back on me. They tortured me to the point that I had to leave my house,” says 55-year-old Chandrakant Noniklal Gajjar. He had nowhere to go but to Laljibhai’s home for the elderly blind. “Without Laljibhai I am not sure in what condition I would have been,” he cries.

For over 40 years, visually impaired Laljibhai Prajapati and his NGO Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, has stood as a pillar of support for hundreds of blind and homeless elderly. He invested whatever little he had to build them a loving home. But now after several decades that home is crumbling and 63 residents are at the risk of ending up on the streets.

From light to darkness and back

“I was seventeen years old when I went to bed one night and woke up blind. My life changed drastically. From dreaming of becoming a doctor one day to being trapped within four walls, my life came to a standstill. My father was a farmer but still he took me to many doctors but no one could help,” says Laljibhai.

According to Laljibhai, he did not let his disability stand in his way and completed his education and got a job as a teacher. ”I was just about 22 when I witnessed the condition of elderly blind persons in society. For those who have families are often abandoned and the rest live lonely lives with no one to care for them. I soon started to help them in whatever way possible. And in 1979 I built a home for homeless and abandoned blind elderly.”

Give life to their dreams

It’s been 40 years since Laljibhai built this house but now after so many years it has become unsafe for the old residents. The helpless elderly who have already faced a fair share of pain and suffering are now compelled to live in the dilapidated building as they have nowhere else to go.

“The blind elderly neither get help from their own families or from the society. Here we adopt them as our own. We take care of all their needs from medical expenses to providing them with nutritious meals. Our only problem now is the condition of our house. There have been times when parts of the ceiling have also come falling. This building is no longer safe for them.” says the founder.

The home I built to care for blind elderly, 40 years back, is now crumbling. Help me build a new home for them where this family of 63 blind senior citizens can find joy and happiness again, Laljibhai pleads.

During a field visit to Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, our team assessed the current condition of the facility that has served as a home for blind elderly for over four decades.

The primary purpose of our visit was to evaluate the structural integrity of the home and to understand the living conditions of the residents. It is clear from our observations that while the home has been well managed and the residents are cared for, the physical structure of the building has deteriorated significantly over the years. Several areas of the home, including the ceiling and walls, show severe signs of wear and pose a safety risk to its inhabitants.

With the funds obtained from the campaign, the final stages of construction of the new home are almost complete. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that the new facility is not only functional but also welcoming. The staff quarters have already been completed and handed over, with staff and their families currently residing there. This step indicates significant progress towards the overall completion and operational readiness of the home.

During interactions, the residents expressed a strong sense of community and gratitude for the support they receive. However, they also shared their concerns about the building's condition. Their anticipation for the move to the new facility is high, as they look forward to a safer and more comfortable living environment.

The construction of the new building is an urgent necessity to ensure the safety and well-being of the 63 blind elderly residents.
