AMAR Seva Sangam is a source of support for persons with disabilities in rural areas. Founded in June 1981 by the indomitable Padma Shri S. Ramakrishnan, this organization has transcended barriers, redefined possibilities, and sowed the seeds of equality and empowerment across all ages and disabilities. Amar Seva Sangam’s foundational philosophy revolves around the creation of a centralized resource center for the holistic development of physically and mentally challenged individuals.
What started as a humble initiative to support five rural children under a thatched roof has now blossomed into a comprehensive ecosystem that spans across thousands of lives. The organization has meticulously strived to bridge the gap between ability and opportunity, underpinning its initiatives with a firm belief in the potential of every individual. With an unwavering commitment, the NGO has extended its reach to over 900 villages, directly impacting more than 20,000 individuals with disabilities. This impact is not limited to a singular facet; rather, it encompasses rehabilitation, education, employment, and empowerment, acting as the cornerstones of a holistic approach.
The founders’ journey
Ramakrishnan’s personal journey laid the foundation for Amar Seva Sangam. His own experience of enduring a life-altering spinal injury during a naval recruitment exercise in 1975 left him quadriplegic. Instead of succumbing to despair, Ramakrishnan channeled his adversity into an opportunity to uplift others facing similar challenges. His visionary leadership has since been the driving force behind the organization’s relentless pursuit of a society where equality reigns supreme, regardless of physical or mental limitations. Central to Amar Seva Sangam’s evolution is the equally inspiring figure of CA S. Sankara Raman, the NGO’s Secretary. Diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and bound to a wheelchair, Sankara Raman’s entry into the organization in 1992 marked a pivotal moment. Leaving behind a thriving career as a Chartered Accountant in Chennai, he chose to dedicate his talents and skills to the service of those in need. His resilience and determination have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s trajectory and amplifying its impact.
The NGO’s vision
The core vision of Amar Seva Sangam is nothing short of transformative. It envisions a haven for individuals with disabilities, where proactive living coexists with societal equality. This vision extends beyond physical and mental challenges, aiming to create a platform that champions equal status, opportunities, and access for all. The organization’s role as an enabling agent propels this futuristic vision, facilitating a paradigm shift where the marginalized become integrated members of mainstream society.
Amar Seva Sangam occupies a distinctive position as one of four organizations in India specializing in spinal injury rehabilitation. It operates through institution-based rehabilitation activities that encompass various vocational training centers. From tailoring and handicraft to computer education and typewriting, these programs underscore the organization’s commitment to equipping individuals with skills that foster self-reliance and economic productivity. Notably, their vocational training center not only imparts skills but also nurtures confidence and self-esteem, transforming beneficiaries into contributing members of society.
Among the organization’s many successful initiatives, the Early Intervention Program stands as a shining example. This program employs a technology-enabled live tracking system that has garnered recognition and awards in 2019 and 2020. This innovative approach underscores Amar Seva Sangam’s dedication to harnessing technology for social change, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most with precision and efficiency.
The accolades and recognition Amar Seva Sangam has received are a testament to its unwavering commitment to its mission. State, national, international, and other awards have affirmed the impact of the organization’s bold and innovative programs. These accolades not only celebrate the organization’s achievements but also highlight its potential as a model for other initiatives aiming to create inclusive and empowering environments.
Amar Seva Sangam’s journey over the past 40 years epitomizes the triumph of human spirit and the potential for transformative change. From a modest beginning to an expansive network that spans across villages and districts, the organization has illuminated the path towards inclusive and equal societies. Through its multifaceted approach encompassing rehabilitation, education, employment, and empowerment, Amar Seva Sangam has redefined disability management in rural areas. Padma Shri S. Ramakrishnan’s vision, coupled with CA S. Sankara Raman’s resilience, has not only shaped the organization but also inspired countless lives. As Amar Seva Sangam continues to sow seeds of empowerment, it reminds us that compassion, determination, and innovation are potent catalysts for change, paving the way towards a more inclusive world.
