DAAN Utsav is an exciting week in October when people across India come together in the spirit of giving and generosity. Daan Utsav is celebrated from October 2nd to October 8th each year and is also called Joy of Giving week. Daan Utsav is an opportunity for us to reach out and help people, do random acts of kindness and make the world a better place by spreading kindness. This is something most people would love to do, but in between work deadlines, household chores and the pressures of life, we often forget about the bigger picture – which is our relationship to the world around us. It is often said that we are all connected and that the actions of one impact the lives of multiple others. This is true of giving too.

If asked, most of us would want to make someone’s day brighter or empower people to live better lives. For example, serve midday meals, plant more trees, sponsor a child’s education or care for abandoned animals. But we don’t know where to start. Daan Utsav is the perfect opportunity to sow seeds of generosity that will go far and make a positive impact on generations of people.

Daan Utsav starts on Gandhi Jayanti which is an opportune time to begin a week-long celebration focused on giving and kindness. To help you get started, we have chosen 5 issues that most people are passionate about:

Plant trees

For people across India, environmental issues are an urgent concern. There are constant news reports about landslides, floods, heat waves, toxic air pollution and other natural disasters occurring across India which are caused by deforestation. When we cut down trees for building and urbanization, it leaves behind devastation. We all know that trees release oxygen and cool the Earth’s temperature, but trees can also absorb harmful toxins. Mission: Right To Clean Air brings together NGOs for mass tree plantation drives. When you support this campaign, you will plant trees in arid regions and also help the NGO conduct follow up care for optimal tree growth, healing our environment and the planet. Serve midday meals

Hunger and malnutrition is still a problem across India. Even though progress has been made in the areas of reducing child malnutrition through official schemes such as the midday meals program, underprivileged children still lack access to nutritious food. The lack of food causes stunted growth, slow development, starvation and even death. Mission: Feed The Hungry prepares fresh and nutritious meals and distributes them to children from poor backgrounds. These meals will help children become healthier, allow them to go to school and aid in their growth and development during their formative years. When you support this campaign, you will help children grow into healthy adults. To support Mission: Feed The Hungry:

Help abused street animals

The prevalence of animal abuse on the streets and in homes is a disturbing aspect of human behavior toward animals. Street dogs and cats are beaten, kicked, chased and are deliberately hit with cars and bikes. Even working animals such as horses and camels are worked almost 24 hours a day, carry loads too heavy for their bodies and are whipped into submission. Mission: End Animal Cruelty rescues abused animals from the streets, fairs and tourist spots and gives them safe and spacious shelter, good food, medical treatment and love and affection to help the animals recover from their wounds, rebuild the broken trust and help them live safe and happy lives. Rescue homeless people

The sight of homeless people on the streets is unfortunately common. But on the streets, people suffer from hunger, diseases and the danger of abuse and exploitation – especially homeless women. Senior citizens are sadly among the more than 1 million people on the streets of India. These elders have been abandoned by their children and family members and left on the streets to fend for themselves at an age when they need help and their health is failing. Mission: Protect Abandoned Elders rescues abandoned and homeless senior citizens from the streets and gives them shelter, food, medicines and basic essentials to help them live healthier and more empowered lives. Educate underprivileged girls

Despite great strides made to reduce the male-female gender ratio and ensure equal participation for females, the girl child is still disadvantaged in India. One of the ways to empower girls is through education. But due to poverty and being unable to afford education, many families prefer to educate their sons instead while their daughters remain at home increasing the risk of issues such as child marriage. Mission: Every Girl In School covers the cost of a girl child’s school fees, uniforms, books, stationery and other school related expenses. When girls are educated, she is better able to improve her future, be safer, contribute to the workforce and educate her children in the future. To support Mission: Every Girl In School:
