DR. Hirubhai Mulljibhai Patel has a long record of service to the nation. From the time of Independence, Dr. HM Patel was the former Defence Secretary from 1947 to 1953, former Finance Minister from 1977 to 1979 and the former Home Minister in 1979. Throughout his service to the people of India in his various capacities, he had a long standing passion for helping the underprivileged of India. He witnessed the suffering of people who were too poor to afford medical care and this suffering often ended in preventable death. To give people from poor and disadvantaged communities a place that would never close its doors to them, Dr. HM Patel founded the organization Charutar Arogya Mandal to give state-of-the-art medical care to people in India who need it most but cannot afford it.
Dr. HM Patel believed that medical care can also be affected in a negative manner by the growing need of medical establishments to make a profit and prioritize financial gain above all else. But in the area of medical care, the focus and precedence should be on opening its doors to all patients and healing their medical conditions. To work toward this goal, Dr. HM Patel founded Charutar Arogya Mandal in 1972 and built a hospital that would never refuse patients based on their financial condition. For the past 53 years, Charutar Arogya Mandal’s Shree Krishna Hospital in Gujarat has served the needs of the most underprivileged patients and given people in the greatest need access to state-of-the-art medical facilities and experienced medical professionals across various medical specializations.
Charutar Arogya Mandal’s hospital
Charutar Arogya Mandal’s Shree Krishna Hospital is located in Anand in the western state of Gujarat and is one of the most professional and well equipped hospitals in the state. The 1,000-bed hospital offers medical care in the area of cancer treatment, cardiology, ENT, neurology, urology, diabetes, endocrinology, woman and child care and other specializations such as transfusions, transplants and palliative care across a one hundred acre campus. Its experienced doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and social workers ensure that thorough medical care is provided to its patients. What sets this hospital apart is that it prioritizes treating the most disadvantaged patients for free and with compensations while making use of available government schemes to provide comprehensive healthcare to its patients.
Standing by the poor and underprivileged
Our team from give.do visited Charutar Arogya Mandal’s hospital and had the chance to speak to its doctors and patients. Dr. Amruta Tripathi is an oncologist at the hospital and shared that cancer is one of the most dreaded and feared diseases and in addition to coming to terms with fighting the disease, families from poor backgrounds are forced to go from one hospital to the next searching for a doctor that will help their father, mother or child. But when the exorbitant cost becomes known, these families have no choice but to watch their loved one succumb to cancer. This is exactly what Charutar Arogya Mandal is working so hard to stop – the needless suffering of people due to a lack of finances by providing excellent medical care for free to its patients who are in the greatest financial need.
Dr. Amruta Tripathi shared that “when cancer patients from poor backgrounds come to us, we stand by them. We hold their hands and assure them that they will get the treatment they need.” For people who are used to doors being shut in their faces, this compassion and care is a relief from the harsh realities of life as a person lacking financial resources. The hospital accepts underprivileged patients with open arms and ensures that end-to-end care is provided either free of cost, with concessions or with the assistance of government schemes. To serve the poor and underprivileged is the heart and the vision of the NGO no matter the cost to the organization. The NGO has an annual 35 crore deficit because of their free services to the poor and needs your support to continue serving people in need.
Keep the dream of Dr. HM Patel alive
From the 1970s, Charutar Arogya Mandal has expanded to a multispeciality hospital and medical college for MBBS students and has treated lakhs of patients who have no other means of accessing medical treatment for themselves or their families. Charutar Arogya Mandal has even expanded its services to rural areas for patients from disadvantaged communities and cannot travel to their hospital. When you support Charutar Arogya Mandal, you help the hospital continue to keep its doors open to underprivileged people who cannot afford medical treatment but need it the most. From the time Dr. HM Patel envisioned a hospital for the poor to the success stories of the present day, the Charutar Arogya Mandal hospital is continuing strong in its mission to serve the poor with excellent medical care.
