HEALTH is one of the most important concerns for people – no matter their gender, profession or background. Health is what allows us to perform almost all other functions in life and without good health, all other needs become secondary. The most urgent need therefore becomes getting access to medical attention or a health NGO that enables us to seek a doctor’s advice, get medical tests, be diagnosed and begin treatment for our ailments.
For most people in India, these medical services are accessible but for millions across India, medical care is out of reach. There are people who live in remote areas with no access to hospitals. There are disadvantaged people who cannot afford medicines and medical tests. Then there are those Indians who are ignored and overlooked by society because they are homeless, poor and invisible to the millions who walk by them each day.
World Health Day
Each April 7th, the world celebrates World Health Day which sheds light on specific health concerns and how different stakeholders can come together to mitigate and ultimately end the suffering of groups of people who lack access to much needed medical care to be alive and well. The role of a health NGO in this effort is a massive one and health NGOs are known to have transformed the lives of individuals, families and entire groups of people for the better with their medical care.
Here are 5 campaigns by health NGOs to improve people’s health:
Palawi
For children who are HIV-positive, medical care is not just urgent but is a matter of life or death. Without regular antiretroviral medication, the health of children with HIV can suffer from severe deterioration and these young individuals can have shorter life spans or even death. In addition to their poor health, these children face discrimination, mistreatment and are denied opportunities to go to school or get jobs. Palawi is a health NGO that rescues these orphans and gives them a safe and secure home, nutritious meals and urgent health care for these little children which includes regular medication, routine check ups at the hospital and the care and attention of doctors. The health NGO also educates the children to make sure they can build strong futures. To support Palawi:
Cuddles Foundation
For children, cancer is an even more dangerous and debilitating disease than for adults. The body of a child, whose immune system is still developing, is not as strong to withstand cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. This results in weakened bodies which ultimately impact a child’s mind and resolve, which must be positive and strong for him or her to fight cancer – and the key is nutrition. For underprivileged families, regular and nutritious food is unaffordable and Cuddles Foundation is a health NGO that steps in and provides children from disadvantaged families with fresh meals, nutrition baskets and nutrition supplements and also ensures the children and their families have access to pediatric nutritionists and caregivers to help them beat cancer. To support Cuddles Foundation:
Neonates Critical Care Foundation
For families from impoverished backgrounds whose infants are in intensive care but are unable to afford neonatal treatment, life is at a standstill. Infants who are born prematurely or who face life threatening illnesses at birth are placed in the neonatal intensive care unit or NICU. But these facilities can be expensive and for families who cannot afford NICU treatment, their children’s lives are on the clock. Neonates Critical Care Foundation is a health NGO that provides financial assistance to these families and also connects them to a network of hospitals with neonatal intensive care facilities. The health NGO also helps parents during this traumatic ordeal with personal counseling and helping mothers cope with extreme stress while their babies are in the neonatal ICU. Mahan Trust
In the forested areas of Melghat in Maharashtra, tribal communities that dwell there have no doctors or hospitals for more than 100 kilometers. No other options remain for them but to go to medicine men and witch doctors for their ailments, which often makes their health problems worse. When Drs. Ashish and Kavita Satav ventured into the forests, they were startled by the people’s lack of medical care. Together, the couple founded a health NGO called Mahan Trust in the 1990s which started treating villagers in a small thatched roof hut. The doctors relocated to the Melghat forests and 28 years later, the health NGO founded a multispeciality hospital that has eradicated multiple health conditions, reduced the mortality rate and improved life for thousands of people. Soham Trust
On the streets of India, homeless people suffer from multiple health conditions due to the lack of shelter, nutritious food or clean water. But without access to doctors or hospitals, their conditions worsen and there is no way out because they are unable to afford medical care. Dr. Abhijit Sonawane witnessed their plight and founded Soham Trust to administer medical treatment to homeless people – right where they are and connect them to hospitals for further treatment. With the moniker “Doctor For Beggars”, Dr. Abhijit quit his full time job with a six-figure income in a major hospital and started driving his bike around the streets to search for people begging for food and for help outside religious establishments – and help them with medical treatment.
