AS part of India’s rich cultural ethos and tradition, senior citizens are revered and held in the highest regard, but the ground reality paints a different picture. Millions of elderly today bear the brunt of abuse, neglect and, in many cases, abandonment. One of the largest nonprofits of its kind HelpAge India has been working tirelessly for the well-being of the elderly across the country since its inception in 1978. HelpAge India has been bridging the gaps in support systems and advocating for the rights of seniors in dire need of help. Their efforts have touched countless lives, bringing comfort, joy, and dignity to lakhs of seniors.

Abuse, and neglect of the elderly, a growing concern

India is witnessing a significant demographic shift with a rapidly increasing elderly population. According to recent reports, the number of senior citizens aged 60 and above has been steadily rising. As of 2023, it is estimated that over 140 million of India’s population comprises senior citizens. This proportion is projected to continue growing in the coming years, making it crucial to address the challenges faced by this demographic.

Large scale migration of the working population towards cities is another factor contributing to the abandonment of seniors in villages. Rural areas which were once heavily dependent on agriculture for sustenance today act as feeders for labour requirements in metro cities. However, the ill and frail elderly who are incapable of work get left behind without any source of income or a caregiver. Similarly, the shift from a joint family system to nuclear family has also played a part in the neglect and abandonment of elderly parents.

Key challenges faced by senior citizens

Hunger & Malnutrition

A significant proportion of the elderly population in India faces grave financial insecurity. As part of age-old tradition, parents tend to invest heavily in the education and marriage of their children, leaving them with little to no savings for retirement. A majority of India’s seniors do not have adequate pensions or savings to support themselves during their golden years. As a consequence, seniors become completely dependent on their children for survival once they are no longer capable of working or contributing to household expenses.

Healthcare

Age-related health issues, chronic diseases, and mobility limitations often require medical attention and the involvement of a caregiver. However, limited access to healthcare facilities and support of family meant, especially in rural areas, poses a significant challenge for seniors. Additionally, the rising cost of medical services can put a strain on the financial resources of the household and, in many cases, may even become the cause of abuse and abandonment of seniors.

Isolation

As India’s society undergoes modernisation and urbanisation, the traditional joint family structure is evolving, leading to an increase in nuclear families. This change often results in elderly individuals living alone or with limited familial support, leading to social isolation. Many seniors experience feelings of loneliness and detachment, impacting their mental and emotional well-being.

How HelpAge India is easing the pain of elderly

Providing a loving home

Imagine a world where every destitute, sick, and abandoned elder has a safe and loving place to call home. HelpAge India has made this dream a reality by establishing model homes in various regions, offering a haven to those in need.

In the heart of Punjab, you’ll find model homes in Patiala and Gurdaspur, providing care and compassion to the elderly. In Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore, another sanctuary stands, offering solace and support. Journeying to West Bengal, Kolkata boasts yet another beautiful space for the aged to thrive.

But that’s not all—HelpAge India’s impact extends far and wide. With their support, 300 old age homes across the country flourish, creating a network of love and care for senior citizens. Additionally, they run five barrier homes that cater specifically to the needs of the aged, ensuring no one is left behind.

Adopt a Gran

There are lakhs of elderly who do not even have access to two square meals or the resources to address their basic needs. Support a Gran, formerly known as the ‘Adopt a Gran’ programme, is one of HelpAge India’s oldest programmes that strives to close this gap. Elderly people in need residing in nursing homes receive monthly rations of wheat, rice, pulses, cooking oil, and basic spices, as well as everyday necessities like detergent, soap, clothing, and some pocket money. The ration gives these elderly people the much-needed sustenance as well as a feeling of security, allowing them to live with respect.

Monthly rations can significantly improve the quality of life as well as health of elderly in need and enable them to lead active lives. Since its inception in 1983, this initiative has earned widespread acknowledgment and has assisted thousands of elderly people in need who lack support, a place to live, and someone to turn to for assistance.

Healthcare and Medical Support

HelpAge India operates mobile healthcare units that traverse rural and remote areas, reaching out to the vast underserved elderly populations. These units are equipped with essential testing equipment and manned by professionals, providing on-the-spot health checkups and consultations. By bringing healthcare services directly to the doorsteps of seniors who lack access to healthcare services and facilities to travel to hospitals, HelpAge India addresses immediate health concerns and identifies potential health risks at an early stage.

Additionally, HelpAge India organises medical camps in collaboration with local communities and healthcare partners. These camps offer specialised medical services, screenings, and treatments to a larger number of elderly individuals within a concentrated time frame. This outreach not only provides medical relief but also raises awareness about preventive healthcare practices.

HelpAge India also works closely with hospitals and healthcare institutions to improve access for the elderly. Moreover, HelpAge India promotes training programs for healthcare staff to sensitise them to the specific needs and challenges of elderly patients, fostering a more compassionate and understanding healthcare environment.

Livelihood Support

In a bid to provide a steady and dignified income for elderly who have no source of livelihood, HelpAge India strives to create employment opportunities for senior citizens. Apart from providing skill development training, this nonprofit in India also collaborates with businesses and employers to extend employment opportunities to the elderly, ensuring that seniors have access to a source of income. By providing job placement assistance and skill matching services, HelpAge India empowers older adults to remain financially independent and actively contribute to society.

HelpAge India’s vocational training programs are tailored to the needs and interests of the elderly. These programs equip seniors with relevant skills that enable them to explore new avenues for self-employment or part-time work. Whether it’s computer literacy, handicrafts, gardening, or any other skill, these initiatives help seniors harness their talents and passions to generate income, enhancing their quality of life.

Raising Awareness About Elderly Issues

As a prominent advocate for elderly rights, HelpAge India actively engages with multiple stakeholders, including senior citizens’ associations with an aim to secure the welfare and rights of senior citizens. HelpAge India ensures that the concerns of the elderly are represented, leading to positive changes in the legal and social framework for the ageing population.

The impactful initiatives undertaken by HelpAge India in healthcare, livelihood support, advocacy, and awareness transformed thousands of lives in the past 4 decades. By combining compassion with strategic action, HelpAge India continues to make a significant difference in empowering senior citizens, reaffirming its commitment to building a society where every elder can age with dignity, security, and joy.
