How an education NGO empowers students on Majuli Island through The Hummingbird School

AYANG Trust is an education NGO that reaches out to the children of tribal families living on Majuli Island to provide education access and a stronger future. Majuli Island is situated in the Brahmaputra River in northeastern India and faces a looming crisis. The island is rapidly shrinking due to erosion, leading to immense struggles for its residents. Amidst this adversity, The Hummingbird School, which was founded by Bipin Dhane, emerges as the light at the end of the tunnel. This blog delves into the inspiring journey of the founder named Bipin Dhane, the establishment of The Hummingbird School and the ongoing fundraising efforts led by an education NGO named Ayang Trust to secure a future for the children of this impoverished tribal community.

Bipin Dhane’s journey and the origins of The Hummingbird School

Bipin Dhane’s roots trace back to the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, where he encountered financial hardships during his upbringing. Despite the challenges, Bipin’s determination led him to secure admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Subsequently, he embarked on a lucrative career in Singapore. However, Bipin’s childhood experiences fueled his inclination towards helping the less fortunate, particularly through education.

In 2016, after witnessing the dire conditions in the remote villages of Majuli, Bipin made a life-altering decision. He left his well-established career abroad and moved to Majuli with the goal of providing education to the deprived children of this inaccessible river island by establishing this education NGO. Reflecting on the initial challenges, Bipin states, “the little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood and the little they could.” This collaborative effort marked the inception of The Hummingbird School in 2017.

The Hummingbird School: a ray of hope for Majuli’s children

The education NGO and The Hummingbird School stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Majuli community. Today, the school caters to over 280 students, with approximately 90 children residing in the hostel. Many of these children, tragically orphaned, have no means of survival. For them, education is not just a pathway to a better future; it is the only way to break free from the cycle of poverty that grips their lives. The mission of the education NGO is to transform their lives for the better

Bipin Dhane emphasizes the significant role that the parents play in the school’s success, stating, “parents have vested their faith in The Hummingbird School because they don’t want their children to suffer the way they have suffered.” The people of Majuli understand the transformative power of the education NGO in providing access to education, and recognizing that it is the key to breaking the shackles of poverty that have constrained generations.

Roopjyoti, a bright student at The Hummingbird School, shares a poignant perspective on the importance of the school and the education NGO. Rooyjyoti shares, “the Hummingbird School is my only hope to succeed in life. I feel I am trying to swim out of Majuli, and my school stands as a lighthouse on the other side of the river. If my school closes down, I feel I will drown in this river. Not just me but every child in the villages around here and our families depend on this school.” Roopjyoti’s words encapsulate the profound impact that The Hummingbird School and the education NGO has on the lives of these children, offering them a lifeline to a brighter future.
