Lives Changed by Udayan Care

Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Rape. Abandonment. Murder. Trauma. These are the words that describe so many childrens’ pasts. Turning the life around of children with such agonizing backgrounds is not a simple task. However, Udayan Care has successfully been fulfilling this duty for the past two decades! Rupali, Rakhi and Jaspreet are living examples of that.

In 2002, a 14-year-old girl called Rupali lost her parents and could not deduce how to live by herself in his world. Udayan Care came to her rescue and she ended up becoming part of Udayan Ghar in Mehrauli. With the foster care model that Udayan Ghar follows, Rupali did not only become academically strong but also gained self-confidence and the ability to love and appreciate others. Today, Rupali works as a trainee with JW Marriot Group of Hotels in Pune.

As a 10-year-old orphaned girl, Rakhi was physically abused and forced to do all the household chores, including the ones requiring relativity large manpower. It was only at the age of 14 that her childhood was returned to her by the Udayan Ghar programme. Emerging from a distressing background, Rakhi would not trust any adult and had a hard time adjusting to the atmosphere of the Ghar. However, with love and emotional support from the Udayan family, Rakhi overcame her trauma and began enjoying her precious childhood years. Today, at 24, she is working with a leading real estate company and is actively involved with her Udayan Ghar family. She has been living independently for the past 3 years as she expands her professional and personal life to new horizons.

Jaspreet’s family belongs to rural Haryana and, therefore, never understood the importance of higher education. The family strongly discouraged Jaspreet from continuing her education, but she knew the relevance of studying very well. She knew that she could improve her life and make a difference in society only by the means of education. However, she was also aware of her financial setbacks and knew her father could not afford to send her for higher studies. Consequently, Jaspreet applied for the Udayan Shalini Fellow program and got selected! This aspiring young girl topped her school in the Class XII Board exam with 90.4% in the Commerce stream! As of today, Jaspreet’s interest lies in Accountancy and her future goal is to work in a bank and lead an independent life.

Enthusiasm. Hope. Aspirations. Hard work. Contentment. Success. Love. These are the words that describe the future of all the children who have been supported and loved by Udayan Care. It is the source of light in the dark lives of these children. As Benjamin Disraeli once said, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to them their own.”
