Manavlok: hope for Maharashtra’s elderly

MANAVLOK began in the 1970s when a group of compassionate and dedicated youths in Maharashtra recognized the pressing socio-economic issues faced by rural communities and embarked on a journey to create positive change. Their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those in need culminated in the founding of Marathwada Navnirman Lokayat (Manavlok) in 1983. Operating from Ambajogai in Maharashtra, Manavlok has become a shining example of an NGO that has made a significant impact on the lives of marginalized individuals and communities. Among its numerous initiatives, the Trupti Kitchen program stands out as a life-changing endeavor, providing nutritious meals and essential support to abandoned elderly citizens.

The birth of Manavlok

Manavlok’s genesis can be traced back to the 1970s when a group of young individuals embarked on a mission to find sustainable solutions to the socio-economic problems plaguing rural communities in Maharashtra. Over the years, they immersed themselves in understanding the intricacies of these challenges, working directly in the field to gain insights and develop effective strategies. This immersive experience led to the formal establishment of Manavlok in 1983, marking the beginning of an enduring commitment to uplift the marginalized and underserved in the region.

Trupti Kitchen: nourishing lives

One of Manavlok’s most impactful initiatives is the Trupti Kitchen program, which has brought about transformative change in the lives of hundreds of elderly citizens. This program, born out of compassion and a desire to combat hunger and destitution among the elderly, provides two nutritious meals a day to approximately 500 abandoned senior citizens. The beneficiaries of Trupti Kitchen primarily include elderly individuals aged 65 and above who have no source of income, people with disabilities, destitute individuals, widows, and elderly orphans – to help, you can donate here

Manavlok’s approach to Trupti Kitchen begins with a comprehensive assessment of the needs and the number of elderly individuals requiring assistance in specific areas. The organization collaborates with local Gram Panchayats, gaining insights from the grassroots level to ensure that their efforts are directed where they are needed most. After conducting thorough research and analysis, Manavlok establishes community kitchens and encourages elderly individuals to avail themselves of nutritious meals. Additionally, they offer a doorstep meal delivery service for those who may have difficulty traveling to the kitchen.

Aniket Dwarkadas Lohiya, the Secretary of Manavlok, emphasizes their commitment to eradicating elderly hunger, sharing in this video that “At present, we are providing meals in three drought-hit districts of Maharashtra. It’s our commitment that we will not allow these elderly people to live in hunger.” Manavlok envisions a society where no elderly individual has to endure the pain of going to bed hungry, and their relentless efforts reflect this vision.

Expanding horizons

Manavlok’s dedication to supporting the elderly in their final years extends beyond providing nutritious meals. They recognize that holistic care involves addressing a multitude of needs. The organization works diligently to expand its operations to reach more elderly citizens in need. Aniket Dwarkadas Lohiya emphasizes, “We are committed to supporting the elderly in their final years with nutritious meals and other forms of care. I come across many villages where elderly people are asking us for help by establishing community kitchens. We want your support to expand our operations.” You can donate here to help Manavlok achieve their vision of caring for the elderly.

Real life transformations

Dattu Sopan Bhandare, an 80-year-old resident of Mudegaon village in the Beed district of Maharashtra, represents the countless elderly citizens whose lives have been positively impacted by Manavlok’s Trupti Kitchen program. Dattu’s children had migrated to urban areas in search of livelihood opportunities, leaving him to fend for himself. Tragedy struck when his wife passed away, leaving him without a support system. Dattu’s ability to work in the fields had waned due to age, and he often found himself going to bed hungry. It was a period of helplessness and despair for him.

However, Dattu’s life took a significant turn for the better when Manavlok extended a helping hand. Through the Trupti Kitchen program, he now receives two nutritious meals a day, ensuring that he does not go hungry. Manavlok’s intervention brought hope, dignity, and sustenance to Dattu’s life, allowing him to live his twilight years in relative comfort.

Motinath Maruti Birgat’s story mirrors the transformative power of Manavlok’s Trupti Kitchen program. At 75 years old, Motinath was left to fend for himself after younger family members left the village, and his wife passed away. His age and inability to work made it impossible for him to provide for himself, forcing him to resort to begging on the streets for sustenance.

With the establishment of the Trupti Kitchen Program in his village, Motinath no longer needed to beg for food. He found solace in the warm meals provided by Manavlok, which not only satisfied his hunger but also restored his sense of dignity. The program not only nourished his body but also his spirit, allowing him to live his remaining years in dignity. You can donate here to help more elderly like Dattu and Motinath.
