EDUCATION is a fundamental right that opens doors to a brighter future, yet for many girls in impoverished and illiterate families in India, this right is often denied. By the time these girls reach adolescence, a staggering 40% find themselves out of school, relegated to household chores instead of pursuing an education. Mission: Every Girl in School offers hope for these girls, aiming to break the chains of limited opportunities and empower them through education. As we celebrate Children’s Day, this is a timely reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference in ensuring that every girl has the chance to learn and build a better future.
Every Girl in School focuses on three major objectives that form the pillars of its transformative impact:
Objective 1: access to education for a better future
The first and foremost objective of Every Girl in School is to provide girls from impoverished backgrounds with access to education, creating a pathway to a better future for themselves and their families. Education is a powerful tool that not only imparts knowledge but also instills confidence, critical thinking skills and a sense of empowerment. By supporting this mission, donors contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty and equipping girls with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of life.
These girls, often overlooked due to socio-economic constraints, are given the opportunity to dream beyond their circumstances. Every donation translates into tangible resources, such as school supplies, uniforms and infrastructure, ensuring that barriers to education are dismantled. As we invest in the education of these girls, we invest in the potential for a brighter, more equitable future for communities as a whole.
Objective 2: reducing school dropout rates
The second crucial objective of Every Girl in School is to reduce school dropout rates among girls, thereby ensuring that more of them complete their education. Girls facing economic hardships are often forced to abandon their studies prematurely, perpetuating a cycle of limited opportunities. By addressing the root causes of dropout rates, this mission creates a supportive environment that encourages girls to stay in school.
Every Girl in School implements targeted interventions, such as mentorship programs, financial assistance and awareness campaigns, to address the multifaceted challenges these girls encounter. Through these initiatives, the mission not only prevents the loss of potential but also fosters a culture of continuous learning, empowering girls to overcome obstacles and reach their full academic potential.
Objective 3: preventing child marriages
One of the most impactful aspects of the Every Girl in School mission is its focus on preventing child marriages. The program is built on the stark statistic that educated girls are six times less likely to marry early. By investing in the education of girls, we create a powerful deterrent against the harmful practice of child marriage, which robs young girls of their childhood and endangers their health and well-being.
Every Girl in School employs a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of child marriages, including poverty, lack of awareness, and societal norms. Through community engagement, educational programs, and advocacy, Every Girl in School works towards dismantling the structures that perpetuate early marriages, allowing girls to envision and pursue a future of their choosing. Sanjana’s story
In the bustling streets of Varanasi, a determined 16-year-old girl named Sanjana Jogi navigates the ebb and flow of life with an unwavering dream. Her father, a hardworking e-rickshaw driver, and her mother, a dedicated housewife, faced the uphill task of providing education for Sanjana and her sister. The financial constraints were overwhelming, threatening to quash the spark of ambition in Sanjana’s eyes.
But, like the proverbial silver lining, hope arrived in the form of generous donors of Every Girl in School who are committed to changing lives. Through their support, Sanjana and her sister received the gift of education – a privilege that became the cornerstone of her journey. The classroom became her sanctuary, a realm where dreams blossomed against the backdrop of textbooks and chalk-dusted air. Determined not only to learn but to empower herself, Sanjana embraced the art of martial arts. The disciplined practice not only fortified her physical strength but also nurtured a newfound sense of confidence and resilience. With each strike and block, she felt the echoes of empowerment reverberating through her spirit.
Today, Sanjana stands not only as a student but as a pillar of hope. Her education, once a distant dream, is now a reality, thanks to the collective effort of compassionate individuals who saw potential in the aspirations of a young girl from Varanasi. With her academic pursuits and martial arts training, Sanjana has become a testament to the transformative power of education.
Yet, her journey doesn’t end there. Sanjana, fueled by gratitude and an unwavering desire for change, aspires to become an advocate. She envisions a society where every girl, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to dream, learn and shape her destiny. In the heart of her dreams, Sanjana carries a message – a call to action that echoes the sentiment, “With your support, dreams thrive, and the future transforms. Be the change, as I aim to be, one dream at a time.”
Gita’s story
In the village of Barpeta, a resilient 8-year-old girl named Gita Bouri embarked on a journey against the odds. Gita’s family, grappling with financial constraints, faced the harsh reality that education was a luxury they could ill afford. With her father toiling as a sweeper and her mother earning daily wages, sending all their children to school seemed an unattainable aspiration.
Gita, however, refused to succumb to the fate that befell her three elder sisters. In a community where early marriages cast shadows over the futures of many young girls, Gita envisioned a different path for herself. She yearned for the warmth of a classroom, the embrace of knowledge and the promise of a future shaped by her own dreams. With the support of compassionate individuals who recognized the potential within her, Gita found herself breaking free from the chains of early marriage. Education became her refuge, a haven where the laughter of learning drowned out the echoes of societal expectations. Gita’s younger brother, initially the sole beacon of education in their family, was soon joined by the determined strides of his elder sister.
In the midst of humble surroundings, her dreams took root. Gita aspired to become a teacher, not merely for the love of learning but to extend the lifeline of education to girls like herself – those on the cusp of liberation from societal constraints. The dusty footpaths of Barpeta echoed with Gita’s footsteps, each one a testament to resilience, hope and the transformative power of support. Her three elder sisters, constrained by circumstances, had entered early marriages, but Gita stood resolute.
As Gita clutched her schoolbooks and gazed toward a future she dared to shape, she carried a fervent wish. “I want to be a teacher,” she declared with unwavering determination, “and help more girls like me.” Gita Bouri, with her dreams and aspirations, became a living testament to the power of education to redefine destinies and illuminate the path to a brighter, more equitable future.
