IN the realm of humanitarian work and selfless service, Dr. Prema Dhanraj stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. Dr. Prema Dhanraj is the founder of Agni Raksha, an NGO established in 1999 with the primary goal of providing comprehensive medical treatment and rehabilitation for burn survivors.

Agni Raksha’s origins and evolution

Agni Raksha embarked on its mission with a focus on addressing the acute physical and psychological trauma experienced by burn victims. The NGO’s early efforts were concentrated on medical treatment that aimed to alleviate pain, minimize physical deformities and enhance the overall well-being of survivors. Over the years, Agni Raksha evolved its strategies to encompass a holistic approach to rehabilitation, recognizing the multifaceted challenges faced by burn survivors.

Agni Raksha has played a pivotal role in creating awareness about burns and prevention within communities. However, the NGO didn’t stop at medical intervention; it recognized the need for a more comprehensive support system. Padma Shri winner Dr. Prema Dhanraj and her NGO Agni Raksha extended their reach to include psychological support and counseling services, reconstruction surgeries, physiotherapy to improve functional abilities and legal assistance to combat domestic violence and discrimination.

Holistic rehabilitation beyond medical care

Burn survivors often endure not only physical scars but also profound emotional and social challenges. Padma Shri awardee Dr. Prema Dhanraj and Agni Raksha acknowledged these complexities and broadened their approach to include economic empowerment and social inclusion in their rehabilitation programs.

Agni Raksha’s initiative focuses on empowering women burn survivors who have faced domestic violence and gender-based discrimination within their families and society. These survivors, often hailing from impoverished backgrounds in the vicinity of Bangalore city, live with physical deformities and psychological scars that extend beyond imagination.

Economic empowerment and social inclusion

The core of Agni Raksha’s intervention is to empower these women economically and socially. By fostering small social groups, the NGO provides a platform for psychological and peer support. These groups become a source of strength for women who have undergone traumatic experiences, offering a sense of community and understanding.

The project aims to equip these women with job skills and entrepreneurship capabilities. Tailoring, crafting, vegetable vending and running small shops are among the vocations covered during the one-year training period. The training involves expert instructors, ensuring that the women acquire not just technical skills but also communication skills vital for economic activities.

A revolving model of empowerment

Agni Raksha adopts a sustainable approach to empowerment. Financial support is provided in a revolving manner to self-help groups, enabling them to initiate income-generating activities. Seed money is given to start their own units, fostering a sense of ownership and self-reliance. The ultimate goal is for these empowered women to continue the work independently, contributing not only to their family’s economic status but also finding a respected place in the community.

Comprehensive support for burn survivors

The 1,300 women beneficiaries of Agni Raksha’s project receive support at various stages of their rehabilitation journey. During acute treatment, counseling is provided to help them cope with the emotional challenges associated with burns. Medical treatment assistance ensures that they receive the necessary care to heal physically.

Skill training covers a spectrum of vocations, from tailoring to beautician skills and communication. Physiotherapy assistance is offered by experienced therapists to enhance functional abilities. The intervention is designed to be comprehensive, addressing the diverse needs of burn survivors.

Impact and sustainability

By the end of the intervention period, the women not only experience enhanced earnings but also become part of self-help groups. These groups, supported by the skills and funds provided, serve as a network of mutual support and empowerment. Beyond financial assistance, the groups play a crucial role in improving mental health and imparting resilience to withstand the challenges faced by these survivors.

Agni Raksha’s model of intervention, characterized by holistic rehabilitation and sustainable empowerment, has far-reaching implications. It goes beyond immediate relief to foster long-term changes in the lives of burn survivors. The ripple effect created by empowered women radiates to others within the community, creating a positive cycle of support and upliftment.
