Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti: an NGO rescuing women from forced prostitution

RAJASTHAN Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti is an NGO that helps nomadic women in parts of Rajasthan who belong to a community that has a common custom wherein fathers and brothers arrange for men to engage in sexual activities with the women in their families in exchange for money i.e., forced prostitution. The women often have no choice but to follow this tradition but this has severe consequences on their lives and the lives of the children too. The women are at risk of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other complications and the children of these women are also exposed to dangers and lack access to education. 

 

The Rajasthan-based NGO realizes the dangers of this practice. In speaking with the local people within these communities, it was found that the root cause of this practice is poverty. Having no money places people in a position of extreme desperation which forces them to resort to pushing women into prostitution just to be able to survive. But the NGO offers them another route, one that will allow them to live their lives in a safe and dignified manner. Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti provides livelihood skills training to the women to help them get decent jobs and education for the children to access employment when they are older.

How the children are affected

Through no fault of their own, women and children are exposed to dangers that leave them with permanent mental scars that affect the rest of their lives. In some cases, the children witness things that no one their age should ever see. In other instances, they are vulnerable to being abused themselves. Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti considers it important to focus on how this demeaning practice affects women and children. The organization believes that ending the practice through empowering initiatives can remove the children from the threat of being pushed into forced prostitution in the future.

 

Working with the women

Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti works in four areas in the state: Jaipur, Ajmer, Tonk and Kota. It rescues the women who are forced into prostitution and gives them livelihood skills training that will help them get jobs that are safe and will help them provide for their families without being in danger. The NGO also conducts health awareness campaigns that give the women much needed health education to prevent the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other STDs as a result of being forced into prostitution. The NGO also provides nutrition and organizes self help groups where counselling and other services are provided. 

Working with the children

In these communities, it is not only the women who are in danger of forced prostitution. Once the children grow older, the girls are also pushed into the practice. To break this cycle of exploitation and prevent the children from being forced into prostitution once they become teenagers, Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti provides education to the children and life skills training to prepare them for a much better and brighter future. Because the children are going to school and receiving an education, there is less likelihood that they will be exploited by this practice and can have safe and healthy futures. 

 

Working with the local communities

In addition to working with the women and children in the areas of rescue, rehabilitation and education, Rajasthan Nut Samaj Sudhar Samiti prioritizes going to the source and working with the local communities to talk to them about the dangers of the forced prostitution of women and children. Acknowledging the problem of poverty, the NGO presents them with alternative solutions to the problem such as livelihood skills training and education. By explaining how debilitating this practice is, the NGO believes that the men in these communities will accept the NGO’s solutions which will go toward making their communities safer.
