Vishranthi Trust: an NGO for children who are abandoned on the streets

ONE day, a few people found some children who had been abandoned in brick factories, bus stations and railway stations – all alone and frightened. The children were suffering from severe malnutrition and anemia and had not eaten in days. The little ones were unkempt and disheveled and were evidently uncared for by a parent or guardian. A Bengaluru-based NGO for children called Vishranthi Trust took them in and cared for them by providing safe shelter, nutritious food and support in a family-like environment that would allow them to enjoy their childhoods and grow into healthy young adults. The children were then enrolled in school and given education, skills training and mentoring programs by this NGO for children who are orphaned and abandoned to help them build their futures. This is the mission of Vishranthi Trust: to transform the lives of orphaned and abandoned children and give them futures filled with hope.

How abandoned children suffer

India has a large population of people under the age of 18, over 400 million to be exact. Many children are abandoned by their families because their parents and relatives are unable to care for them due to extreme poverty. These destitute families, therefore, make the decision to abandon their children, not realizing that the children are in even greater danger without an adult to care for them. If the children are found by people who harm children, they will sadly become victims of crimes such as child labour and other forms of exploitation. But, because Vishranthi Trust is known in the area for being a place of refuge and safety for abandoned children, these children are often brought to this NGO for children by the local police or other individuals, where they begin their new journey in a safe and secure home.

The mission of Vishranthi Trust

Since 2003, this compassionate NGO for children has taken in and cared for over 100 children and helped the youngsters overcome the trauma and heartbreak of abandonment by supporting them in a nurturing environment. Some of these include children who have been neglected by their families and those with mild disabilities. Vishranthi Trust is currently taking care of 20 orphaned and abandoned children who have been rescued from destitution and given a healthy and positive environment to live, learn and grow. Your charitable donation can help these children have safe shelter, education and a nurturing environment. To support Vishranthi Trust, you can donate here.

A safe and loving home for abandoned children

Vishranthi Trust is an NGO for children that operates with the belief that every child deserves a safe and secure home to thrive. To tend to the children’s basic needs, the organization provides safe shelter, nutritious meals, clean clothes and medical care. To help them build their futures, education, vocational training and mentoring programs are provided. The children of Vishranthi Trust also benefit from counselling and psychological support to help them deal with the pain they have suffered. The NGO for children also organizes recreational activities such as sports and arts and crafts to help their physical and mental development. Above all, Vishranthi Trust is a place where the children can have fun and receive the love and affection that has been missing in their lives.

The effects of trauma on children

On the streets, children develop coping mechanisms to help their bodies curb the uncontrollable hunger they feel, such as constantly chewing on objects they find on the roadside. This is often a long term behavioral trait that is difficult to overcome, even after getting access to food. Furthermore, children who are abandoned suffer in more ways than psychologically and emotionally; their physical bodies begin to exhibit the signs of their trauma. The NGO for children also shares that little girls and boys that are abandoned are sent to red light areas and sexually exploited by adults. This abandonment of children, shares Vishranthi Trust, creates a web of activity that has disastrous consequences for children.

A compassionate NGO for children founded by 3 women

Vishranthi Trust is headed by Sarasa Vasudevan who founded the NGO for children along with her mother and her mother-in-law. The story goes that when Sarasa’s mother retired from a corporate finance career, she asked her daughter how she could productively spend her time. Sarasa, who also had a corporate career, answered that destitute children are in such desperate need but don’t get enough attention – so they should be her focus. Vishranthi Trust was thus born as an NGO for children in need and has cared for orphaned and abandoned children since then, transforming their lives and giving them a foundation upon which to build strong futures.

How you can help Sarasa’s NGO for children

Your support is needed to help Sarasa Vasudevan of Vishranthi Trust continue to care for 20 orphaned and abandoned children. Without the home run by this NGO for children, the rescued children will no longer have the safety, care and support the home provides. Sarasa emotionally shares that “if we were to close our doors to the children, I am afraid their future would be very bleak, very dark. We don’t know where they would go or how they would survive. I am afraid that they may go back to the streets.” Sarasa and the entire team at Vishranthi Trust appeals to donors to help the NGO for children maintain the quality of care given to these innocent children and “give them life, give them hope and the ability to dream”.
