IN the aftermath of the Wayanad landslides, CCTV footage is starting to emerge of the immediate devastation which swept away entire villages and reduced more than one thousand homes and other buildings to rubble on July 30th and 31st 2024 in Wayanad, Kerala. TV news and social media are filled with images and videos of homes collapsing with people still inside, shops and livelihoods crumbling and suffering people grieving the loss of their homes and loved ones.

In the midst of this devastation, our NGO partner ActionAid Association was at ground zero administering First-Aid and emergency medical care and bringing food, clean water and temporary shelter to people in desperate need. Now, ActionAid Association is supporting long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts to help get people back on their feet and rebuild their lives after having lost so much.

Who is ActionAidAssociation?

ActionAid Association is an organization that has been working with the poor and marginalized across India since 1972 and was founded in the United Kingdom in the same year with the goal to “work for a world free from poverty and injustice”. As soon as the Wayanad landslides hit the northeastern district in Kerala, ActionAid Association was in the affected areas distributing urgent aid and providing relief for thousands who were caught unprepared for this natural disaster that struck at 2:00 am to 4:00 am on July 30th in the dead of night. The organization’s nearest office conducted an immediate assessment and began providing rice, food kits, bed sheets, blankets, bathing soap and sanitary napkins to the affected population in multiple villages in Wayanad.

Wayanad landslides FAQs

Here are a few FAQs about the Wayanad landslides which affected more than 10,000 people and caused more than 400 deaths:

Q: What is happening in Wayanad, Kerala?

In the early hours of Tuesday, July 30th between 2:00 am and 4:00 am, massive landslides hit the Wayanad district of Kerala. These disastrous landslides occurred following continuous heavy rainfall in the area and the damage was further exacerbated by the area’s sloping hill terrain.

Q: Where has the most damage occurred?

The landslides have mainly affected the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha located in the hilly regions of Wayanad. As soon as the landslides hit, hundreds of homes, shops and all other buildings were destroyed and the bodies recovered in initial rescue operations were from this area.

Q: Do people still need help?

While the worst is over, there are still displaced people living in camps and are desperate to find ways to move to more permanent housing and start to rebuild their lives after having lost their livelihoods, possessions and homes. While official resettlement initiatives have started, people are still in need of assistance.
