EVERY year, since its inception in 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated on June 5 across the globe. First conceived in 1972’s Stockholm Conference on Human Environment it has been the UN’s primary medium for promoting awareness for environmental protection.
This year WED is being hosted by Colombia in partnership with Germany with the theme “Celebrate Biodiversity”. The recent bushfires in Australia and the Amazon, the horrendous locust infestation ravaging East Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, and the Covid-19 pandemic are all signs for us humans to take heed of how our actions are affecting the planet and preserve biodiversity – the interconnected web of life that we must respect.
India too suffers from dying ecological reserves, depleting essential natural resources and metropolises choking under the weight of human activities. Working in unison with governmental authorities to drive change, here are five NGOs that you can make an online donation to – a contribution to ensure the perpetuation of nature and the environment
Tropical Research and Development Centre (TRDC)
Started in 1994, TRDC tackles issues of acute poverty, resource degradation, ill health, illiteracy and lack of awareness on various aspects of development among the rural communities. TRDC’s Paryavaran project, which is run in the Western Ghats and Mysore Districts, intends to address the issues of climate change by working in collaboration with local farmers through enhancement and restoration of wetlands and water resources, and conservation of wildlife. It is now working to restore groundwater through rainwater harvesting in Bhatrakere in Uttar Karnataka.
Goonj undertakes disaster relief, humanitarian aid and community development in parts of 23 states across India. Goonj is currently working on programmes to help local communities get access to clean water and sanitary napkins to underprivileged women.
SankalpTaru is an e-NGO or an IT enabled NGO active across 18 Indian cities with its pledge to plant trees for the people, by the people. SankalpTaru uses geo-tagging and other advanced environmental techniques in order to make it easier for people to track their planted trees which has many benefits, ranging from the power to fight pollution to strengthening the livelihoods of farmers.
Marathwada Gramin Vikas Sanstha (MGVS)
Established in 1995 to promote community-based development programmes, the vision of MGVS is to create a society with equal access to basic necessities and dignified living. The organisation works in the fields of children, community health service and awareness, employment generation programmes, water, and sanitation in various parts of Maharashtra. Donations to this organisation will go towards delivering sanitation facilities to numerous families.
BSS was started in 2002 with a commitment to work for the poor and disadvantaged people in north India. It primarily works in the sectors providing renewable energy like solar lamps to poor households who don’t have access to electricity or the means to afford hard-to-obtain and unhealthy kerosene lamps. These lamps not only light up people’s lives but also help to conserve the environment.
