“Every month, we meet girls who were kidnapped as teenagers”

The journey from a joyous childhood to despair and suffering

Starved, whipped, and exploited
Helpless girl children are forced into the trade in gruesome ways. They are broken to strip away their innocence. With no parents to turn to, hope gradually dies. Captivity and violence becomes their new reality.

Sold to the highest bidder
Many of these girls are then sold to the highest bidder like commodities, eventually ending up in red-light areas, across the country. At a tender age they are thrown thousands of kilometers away from their homes.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM
Sanjivani Hingne left behind a corporate career to become a tireless protector of children born into red-light areas
THE SITUATION NOW
Through Swadhar IDWC she has built safe homes, education and counselling centres for over 200 vulnerable children. “What will the child get whose mother is trapped in a red-light area? … Our only concern is the child getting into mainstream society and not continuing in the mother’s profession,” she says.
