"I can go hungry for a night or two without food and still stay alive, but I am defenceless against chilly weather,” says Gendu, 70-year-old widow mother in a frail voice. Gendu begs for food on the streets of Vrindavan to stay alive, but she dreads cruel winters. “I don’t have anything to defend myself against the weather. Their bodies get so weak during winter that they become susceptible to various diseases. As Vrindavan is on the banks of Yamuna, it gets very cold here. I have seen many women dying in their beds because of the cold. Sometimes it gets so cold that many don’t even feel like getting out of bed. This may bring them more diseases,” says Winnie. The situation gets so desperate during winters that many widow mothers living on the streets spend their nights in gaushalas (cow shelters) near Vrindavan. “But, even here, they cannot get the kind of clothes and bedding that can keep them warm. They need thermals, sweaters, gloves, caps and blankets,” says Winnie.The state of elderly widow mothersElderly widows who are abandoned by their own families are amongst the most vulnerable people in India. Many end up in Vrindavan after being abandoned, beg for food, and spend their days in damp little rooms or on the streets. While there are a few shelter homes like the one by Maitri, they cannot accommodate all the widow mothers. “We provide nutrition to over 250 widow mothers who are not part of our shelter home. But there are many more who need support during winter. Prasad and his wife Anu once had a daughter, little Prarthana , who passed away when she was still a toddler. Heartbroken but determined to honour her memory, they decided to dedicate their lives to those who had no one.  What began as adopting eight distressed children has now grown into a loving community that survives solely because Prasad refuses to give up. “My father, a farmer, ended his life owing to debt and distress. What I have faced as a child, I don't want any other child to face the same, and that is the biggest motivation. At present, we have 45 children and 25 abandoned elderly in our shelter home. We are their family. Anu (my wife) loves them like her own, and I provide for them and protect them like any father would,” says Prasad who stands as the last hope for these young ones and the elderly.  Unfortunately, he has been supporting this home with his meager earnings as an autorickshaw driver. Today, those memories shape every decision he makes as the founder of Prathana Foundation, a home where abandoned elderly parents and orphaned children live together, as one family.“Our home is very unique. Here, orphans and elderly parents who have been abandoned by their children live together as a family. Here grandparents get the love of grandchildren, and orphaned kids are cared for by the elderly,” he shares with quiet pride.  In this one home, 45 children and 25 abandoned elderly have found love, belonging, and dignity, things life once denied them.But behind this warmth is a daily struggle that Prasad carries alone.  The daily struggle for survival“It’s very difficult for me to earn enough to sustain such a big home as an auto rickshaw driver. I am constantly in fear that if I run out of money, what will happen to the elderly and the orphans,” he says. Trained veterinarians clean wounds, perform surgeries, and nurse them back to health. “Watching a monkey who couldn’t move begin to climb again after weeks of treatment, that’s what keeps us going,” Hari Kishan shares.From fear to freedomMany monkeys that reach Guardian of Angels have endured unimaginable cruelty, chained for years, burned, or beaten for amusement. “When they first arrive, their eyes are full of pain and distrust,” says Hari Kishan. “But with time, care, and love, those same eyes begin to soften. They start to trust again.”Once recovered, the team ensures the monkeys are safely released back, far from the dangers of roads and electric lines.
